Gas Shortage Impacts Traditional Hunting and Gathering in Makkovik

The residents of Makkovik are angered by their lack of gas.

Fortunately, Kevin Flowers from Hopedale delivered 20 drums of gas to Makkovik on his long liner last Wednesday.

This was done at the request of Woodwards Oil in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

Unfortunately town residents are only allowed to purchase $50.00 worth of gas every three days.

Woodwards Oil believed that 20 drums of gas would be enough, but residents are not pleased with the limited amount of gas available to them.

Similar to the situation with the Northern Ranger, the Woodwards Oil boat that was scheduled to deliver gas is in need of engine repairs.

As a result, it is not expected to arrive until later on this week.

Joshua Jararuse is a gas attendant in Makkovik.

He says that the lack of gas has not only angered the residents, but has also impacted their traditional hunting and gathering practices.

Jararuse says that people like to go off hunting, but cannot do so because there is not enough gas in Makkovik.
