Umiak 1 Departs Voisey’s Bay Site

The Umiak 1 is making its way through the ice out of the Voisey’s Bay site today following the vessels first scheduled trip of the year.

The icebreaker made its way into the site on Monday.

The vessel ran into a couple of problems during its first trip of the year.

Extreme weather conditions caused a delay in the arrival of the Umiak 1 on Sunday.

Some mechanical problems also had to be addressed before the vessel departed Edward’s Cove.

Employees of Sikumiut Environmental Management Incorporated will be placing the pontoons and safe markers along the ship’s track for the safety of travelers.

The two pontoons used for safely crossing the ship’s track will be located near Taktok and Tabor Islands.
