Turbot Season Begins in Makkovik (Audio)

It’s turning out to be quite a successful season for the Nunatsiavut fishery.

Keith Watts is the General Manager with the Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative.

He says the crab fishery in Makkovik could be winding down this weekend.

There is one crab-harvesting vessel left to bring in their last catch for the season.

821,986 pounds of crab has been landed at the Makkovik fish plant to date.

The plant will now be concentrating on the turbot fishery.

The turbot season opened last Friday.

Six crews are currently harvesting their first catch of turbot for the season.

Meanwhile, the char fishery at the Nain plant will close this weekend.
