The start of the Cain’s Quest Endurance Snowmobile Race is ten days away.

The 2018 racers will depart Labrador West at 12 noon on Friday, March 2nd.

They will head to Churchill Falls before starting their journey through remote checkpoints north to Nain.

From there, racers will travel to the south coast to L’Anse Au Claire before making their way back to the finish line in Labrador West through Central Labrador, completing a full Labrador Circuit.

The snowmobile racers will be passing through a total of 19 checkpoints, and covering an estimated 3,200 kilometers.

The 19 checkpoints from Churchill Falls include: Sail Lake, Border Beacon, Nain, Natuashish, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik, Rigolet, Mealy Mountains Park, Cartwright, Black Tickle, Charlotte Town, Mary’s Harbour, to L’Anse Au Claire, and from there heading back to Labrador West through Eagle Plateau, Goose Bay, Churchill Falls to Esker, and on to the finish line at Lab West.

The Combined Councils of Labrador held their 46th Annual General Meeting in Happy Valley- Goose Bay, NL recently.

The AGM was held on February 7- 10th.

Trent O’Brien is the President.

He says the issues they talked about were transportation, airlines, the Nain airstrip, health and other issues.

O’Brien says there was a good turnout of delegates.

The 17th Annual Bernard and Jeffrey Webb Memorial hockey tournament will go ahead tonight at the Nain Husky Centre.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm.

There will be four teams in this year’s tournament, with a possibility of a fifth being added.

Right now the teams registered are team Ice Bubbles, Other Guys, the Harris Team, a Midget team, and possibly the Gracie Team.

During the tournament, there will be a number of food items being sold, so come out and enjoy some exciting hockey and good food.

The Public Legal Information Association is hosting information sharing circles about the child protection system, terminology, parent’s rights and the court process.

This will be happening on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 in the Parks Canada Pulâpvik Room.

At 11:00 am, they’ll be having a session for community support workers and service providers.

And at 6:00 pm, they’ll have another session for parents, families and community members.

The Nain Moravian Church will be celebrating its 247th Anniversary on Monday, February 19, 2018.

The Moravian Church was established in 1771.

On this day, February 19th, the first Inuk was baptized in 1776.

His name was Kimmingusi, and he was baptized Peter.

The Moravian Church and the town celebrate this day annually.

As the Nain Congregation celebrates the morning service, the Nain Choir sings “Ahak, Ahak Gudibta Iglunga” as the second bell is ringing.

The Church services are held at 10 am, the lovefeast takes place at 3 pm, and the closing service goes at 5 pm.

The OKalâKatiget Society will be closed on Monday, February 19th in observance of the Moravian Church anniversary.

There will be no IlinniaKatigennik show next week on February 20, 2018, due to the Moravian Church holiday.

The Nunatsiavut Government Status of Women office will be honoring a Labrador Inuit Woman with a 2017 Inuit Woman of the Year Award.

There is no set criteria for this award; it is open for anyone to nominate a Labrador Inuit Woman who they feel deserves to be recognized as Inuit Woman of the Year 2017.

The 2018 Arctic Expedition for Students on Ice begins this year in Canada’s capital city in Ottawa.

Caitlyn Baikie is the Arctic Students and Program Manager with the Arctic Expedition with the Students on Ice team.

She says the expedition starts on July 23, 2018, and ends on August 7, 2018.
Baikie adds that the selected Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries will start a couple of days earlier on July 21, 2018.

The deadline to apply for this exciting trip is March 1, 2018.

The Federal Government has organized and paid a contractor to visit the Residential School Survivors in their communities in Labrador and Nunatsiavut.

Retired Judge James Igloliorte has been awarded the contract.

He says the purpose of the visits is to get some stories from the survivors who attended residential schools.

Igloliorte says he was in Cartwright this morning, and is into his second day there.

He says he met with half a dozen survivors to date, and with this being the first phase of hearing stories, he expects more people will come forward with their stories.

He added he will be travelling to Hopedale next on Tuesday, February 20- 22, 2018.

Survivors were sent a letter of these upcoming visits to them dated Sunday, January 31, 2017.

The letter stated that this is a unique opportunity to memorialize not just your own stories, but those of your fellow survivors who passed on, as well as the stories of the communities and your family.

And that it is also important to document the history of these institutions, so that the world will know what happened, and so the stories will not disappear.

The 3rd Annual Victoria Caroline’s Memorial Tournament CO-ED Volleyball Tournament will be taking place in Natuashish, NL from February 22-24, 2018.

There are rules such as men cannot block women, men must hit from the back court, and the net will be set at the women’s height.

The games of round robin are best 2 out of 3, games to 21, and if it goes to a 3rd set, the game will go to 15.

The playoff games are also best 2 out of 3, with games to 25, and if it goes to a 3rd set, the game goes to 15.

This tournament is for ages 13 and up.

There is a maximum of 12 teams to be registered.

The registration fee per team is $300.
