The Nunatsiavut Government Status of Women office will be hosting luncheons in each Nunatsiavut community in honor of International women’s day.

The theme this year is Women in Leadership.

Each luncheon will have a local female keynote speaker with a background in running for political office.

The luncheons will take place in the following locations:

Nain on March 12th at 12 pm at the JS Centre.

Postville on March 14th at 12 pm at the Community centre.

Rigolet on March 15th at 12 pm at the Community hall.

And Makkovik on March 20th at 12 pm at the DHSD multipurpose room.

Hopedale, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and North West River luncheons will be posted once a date is determined and confirmed.

Nain will be hosting this year’s 38th Annual Heritage Dog Team Race on March 17, 2018.

Joan Dicker is one of the Coordinators for the race.

There are eight teams registered so far.

Dicker adds that there are 50/50 tickets still for sale as a fundraiser for the event.

The First place prize for the race is $2,018.00.

Second place is possibly $1000.00, depending on the amount of money raised.

And the third place prize will be $500.00.

The 2018 Commercial Fishery applications are now available at Nunatsiavut Government Offices in Upper Lake Melville and Nunatsiavut.

All applications and required documents must be completed and submitted to the Director of Renewable Resources by April 6 at 4:30 pm.

Looking for housing to rent?

The Nunatsiavut Government (NG) has applications available for housing/apartments within the Prototype (experimental) building in Nain, NL.

There are three units for youth (18-30 years) and three units for seniors (55+) available.

The maximum number of individuals living in the unit cannot exceed two adults and two children (under the age of 16 years).

The rent is $550.00 a month (including heat and lights).

The Application deadline is March 19th, 2018.

Please drop by the NG administration building or DHSD in Nain to pick up your application.

Completed applications should be faxed to Brian Lyall at the NG office in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL.

Vale NL is excited to introduce this year’s Job Readiness Training Program (JRTP).

Vale representatives will be in Nain today from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm in the Nunatsiavut Government building boardroom.

And tomorrow- Thursday, March 8th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.

They will give an overview of the program with a presentation and a one on one interview.

This program is designed for Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries and Innu Nation Members.

They will also have refreshments and a door prize.

The champions for this year’s Cain’s Quest are once again defending champs Team 22.

Team Maine/Southern Sno Riders- Andrew Millie of Lab City, NL and Robert Gardner of Mercer, Maine, USA- crossed the finish line at Tanya Lake in Labrador City this morning at 10:52 am, winning the Labrador endurance race for the second time in a row, and repeating their 2016 victory.

Team 00, Innu Hawks, Len Rich and Aaron Poker, came in second at 12 noon.

Team 88, Southern Sno Riders/Team Maine Racing, Dixon Clements and Scott Biddle, arrived at the finish line at 12:46 to capture 3rd place.

The prizes are as follows: 1st- $50,000, 2nd- $30,000 and 3rd- $20,000.

As of now, there are 16 teams scratched from the race.

There will be a luncheon tomorrow for all women in Nain at the Jeremias Sillit Centre, starting at 12 pm.

The luncheon is in honour of International Women’s Day which is tomorrow, March 8th, 2018.

The purpose of the International Women’s Day is to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievement of women.

All women are invited to attend.

Emily Angers is the Program Coordinator with Mokami Status of Women in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL.

She says they will be having a luncheon at the College of the North Atlantic.

They hold the event every year.

Angers says everyone is welcome, especially women.

She adds there will be speakers and musicians there as well.

The annual Makkovik Jamboree is scheduled for next weekend on Saturday, March 17, 2018.

Linda Pottle is the Team Leader for the Department of Health and Social Development in Makkovik, NL.

She says this year’s event will be an exciting one, because it is their 25th anniversary celebration.

Pottle says they have a list of invited entertainers from out of town who have responded to join the jamboree.

Gary Mitchell, Ed Davies, Cathy Lane, and Brandon Pardy, all from Goose Bay, George Davies, who lives in Wabush, and Dale Hamel of Cartwright will be entertaining the crowd.

Pottle added Gary Mitchell will be the MC again this year.

The opening ceremonies start at 6 pm at the Community Hall, and the performers start entertaining at 6:35 pm.

Today is the Young Women’s Traditional day in Nain.
Maria Dyson is the captain.

She says there are seven girls celebrating their day, and they are all first timers.

Dyson says they had to pay fee of $15.00.

She says the cooks are Maria Ikkusek, Pauline Tuglavina and Matt Barbour, and the pijik (helper) is Joshua Jack.

They went to their first church service at ten this morning, and will attend the love feast at 3pm, and the closing service at 5 pm.

Dyson says after the day is over, the girls will go up to the Jeremias Sillitt Centre and play some games.
