The Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD) in Nain has a job opportunity for a temporary full-time maternity replacement for the Youth Outreach Worker position.

Under the direction of the Regional Youth Program Services Coordinator, the Youth Outreach Worker’s main focus will be to provide early intervention and outreach services to children and youth engaging them in their own settings.

Some duties include but are not limited to:

Assist youth in accessing community services, such as CSSD, community clinics, mental wellness and healing, recreation programs, etc.

Qualifications include:

Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with coursework relevant to child and youth care, for example, diploma in Community Studies or Early Childhood Education.

And a clear code of good conduct from the RCMP, and Child Protection Records Check.

Preference will be given to qualified beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

The 28th Levi Pottle Memorial dog team race took place in Rigolet over the weekend.
Emily Wolfrey is one of the committee members.

She says seven teams entered the race this year.

Wolfrey says they also had other activities going on while the dog team race was running.

Work on the six-plex prototype building in Nain is nearing completion.

Kate Mitchell is the First Minister and Ordinary Member for Makkovik for the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says the building is expected to be open sometime next week.

Mitchell says this building is for Seniors ages 55 and up, and for Youth ages 18 to 30.

She says the rental fee is $550.00 a month, including heat and lights.

Clocks are turned forward 1 hour to Sunday, March 11, 2018, at 3:00 am local daylight time instead.

Sunrise and sunset will be about 1 hour later than the day before on March 11.

That means there will be more light to enjoy the evening.

So don’t forget to turn your clock 1 hour ahead before bedtime Saturday night.

The 15th Annual Tikigiaksaugusik Festival in Rigolet is into their third day of events.

Today, they are doing the Francis Campbell Memorial Shooting Match until 4 pm.

There are also Grades 7 to 12 games at the hall this afternoon from 3:30 to 4:30 pm.

A family dance goes tonight from 6 to 12 pm.

A breakfast from 7 to 9 am kicks off tomorrow’s events.

The Levi Pottle Memorial Dog Team Race takes off tomorrow at 10 am at Double Mer.

And tomorrow afternoon from 1 to 4, there will be games on the cove, and then a Giant Bingo in the evening at 7:30 pm.

And to end the festival, a BYOB will take place from 10 pm until 3 am.

Youth interested in applying to the Students on Ice Expedition still have a chance to get their applications in.

Full scholarships are available for a majority of youth participants.

The deadline to apply has been extended for youth from Inuvialuit, Nunavik, Nunavut and Nunatsiavut to March 19, 2018 at 11:59 pm EST.

The Nunatsiavut Government Status of Women’s office will be hosting Leadership workshops for Inuit women in each Nunatsiavut community and Upper Lake Melville.

Lynn Hammond of Equal Voice NL will be travelling to each community to host a one day workshop on how to run a campaign, building self-confidence and looking at an election tool kit specific for Nunatsiavut.

The Status of Women’s office hopes to encourage more Inuit women to think about running for office in the upcoming Nunatsiavut elections.

The OKâlaKatiget Society contacted North Coast communities to see what they offer in their community freezer.

In Makkovik, they have polar bear meat, char and cod.

Hopedale has moose meat, cod, can foods, sugar and tea.

In Nain, the freezer has polar bear meat, partridges and seal fat.

The Rigolet freezer has partridges, moose meat and squash berries.

We could not get ahold of Postville and Happy Valley-Goose Bay, as no one was available.

The George Lane Memorial Dart Tournament this year will take place on March 16 and 17, 2018 in Hopedale, NL.

OK Radio spoke with Jill Nitsman, one of the coordinators for the event.

The tournament will be held at the Nanuk Centre.

There are 3 or 4 teams registered so far.

The registry fee is $20 per person.

Teams must consist of 4 players- 2 females and 2 males.

The deadline to register is anytime before March 16.

First prize will once again be $1000.

Second prize is $600.

And third prize is $400.

Nitsman adds that they are auctioning off two loads of wood to fundraise for the event.

There are also tickets on sale for Grand in your Hand selling for $10 a ticket.

The 13th Annual Carl Sheppard Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament will be held in Postville this weekend.

It will take place at the B .L Morrison School on March 9 and 10th, 2018.
Jennifer Jacque-Poole, the Recreation Director in Postville, said the deadline to apply was yesterday.

Each team will have a maximum of four males, four females, and a goaltender.

There are three teams registered from Makkovik, and three teams from Postville.

The minimum age to play in the tournament is 14 years.

The registration fee is $10.00 per player, and is to be paid before the tournament starts.
