Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe announced today that the fourth general election for Ordinary Members to the Nunatsiavut Assembly will take place on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, as per section 4.5.2 of the Labrador Constitution and sections 26 and 27 of the Nunatsiavut Elections Act.
Nominations for candidates will close at 2 pm AST on March 27, 2018.
It was a great year for the mining operations at Voisey’s Bay mine site in 2017.
Peter Langlois is the Director of Operations at Vale NL.
He says they are at zero injuries at the mine site, which is great for safety performance.
And that they delivered nickel concentrate to the processing plant in Long Harbour at the Island.
Langlois says normal operations are continuing for 2018, but Voisey’s Bay mine expansion regarding the underground mining is still on hold.
He added the winter shipping started in late January, and the Umiak 1 is at Edwards Cove on its second run now.
The last voyage will be after Easter Break in April.
Langlois adds the mill and concentrator will be closed for a 10 week period due to annual maintenance activities in June.

The defending champs continue to set a blistering pace in the grueling Cain’s Quest race in Labrador.
Team 22, Maine Racing/Southern Sno Riders, Andrew Milley and Robert Gardener, arrived in Goose Bay, NL from the checkpoint in Eagle Plateau at 6:58 am, and are expected to leave Goose Bay en route to the second last checkpoint after their 12 hour layover in Goose Bay.
Team 00, Innu Hawks, Len Rich and Aaron Poker, arrived in Goose Bay, Checkpoint 17, at 8:35 am today, and are expected to leave after their 12 hour layover in Goose Bay.
Team 88, Southern Sno Riders/Team Maine Racing, Dixon Clements and Scott Biddle, arrived in Goose bay at 8:43 am, and are expected to leave at 8:43 pm after their 12 hour layover.
As of now, there are 10 teams scratched from the race. They are:

The 2nd Annual Grace Jararuse Flowers Memorial Ice Hockey Fun Tournament in Nain, NL, came to a great end yesterday.
In the Minor Hockey division, the bronze medalists were the Lucky Pucks, Bop’s Team were the silver medalists, and Team Gracie captured the gold medal.
In the award ceremonies for the Minor Hockey division, the award winner for Most Sports-Minded Female was Madison Dicker, the Top Defensemen was Johnny Dicker, and Tristan Denniston was named the Most Sports-Minded Male.
Kirsten Dicker was named the MVP Female with 24 points, the MVP Male and Top Scorer with 28 points- 21 goals and 7 assists- was Samuel Flowers, the Top Goalie was Gilbert Haye, and the Top Goaltender Overall was Shannon Holwell.
And the winner of the Grace Jararuse Flowers Award, presented to the player who reflects the image and spirit of Grace on and off the ice with good sportsmanship, was Peyton Dicker.
In the Men’s Division, the Harris Team are the Grace Memorial Ice Hockey champions for 2018.
The Old Timers took 2nd place, and the Bantam and Midgets team captured 3rd place.
In the awards ceremonies for the Adults division, the Most Valuable Player and Most Sports-Minded Player was James Dicker, the Top Scorer was Michael Dyson, the top goaltender was Steven Denniston, the Top Goaltender Overall was Brian Flowers, and the Top Defensemen was Edward Harris.
A regional economic summit is taking place in Rigolet starting today, and going until March 7, 2018.
This will provide an opportunity for potential Inuit entrepreneurs and new start-up businesses to connect with key funding and support agencies operating in Atlantic Canada.
The first forum of its kind in the region, the Nunatsiavut Business Start-up Summit was initialized by the Division of Economic Development in response to the significant increase in business development inquiries in the past year.
Utilizing a partnership approach, Inuit businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs will be paired with industry experts and service providers to encourage business success and sustainability.
The summit will see representatives from various business sectors, as well as funding agencies including CBDC, Ulnooweg, AES, BDC, TCII, ACOA, Inuit Pathways, etc.
The event will also focus on community engagement, addressing identified community issues (i.e. food security), language use and retention, traditional skills promotion, local service development, partnerships for success, stakeholder interaction, cultural industries, supporting northern economies and community development events.
An interactive community event will be hosted at the Northern Lights Academy gym tonight at 6 pm as well.
The Water and Sewer systems for the Community of Rigolet are in need of maintenance.
According to Jack Shiwak, the AngajukKâk of the Rigolet Inuit Community Government, as soon as the weather warms up and the snow goes a bit more, they could get the work completed.
Shiwak also says that this is his last year, and hopes that everything that they applied for in the last two years is clued up.
But with everything late, he hopes that it will be off of the table when the new councils comes aboard.

To date, there have been no reports of illegal trail use or other race infractions.
Racers have been treated to welcoming crowds of community members, eager volunteers and warm meals.
Hundreds of volunteer crews have been working together to make Cain’s Quest 2018 an incredible off-trail racing experience for the determined forty-one teams.

The Twin Flames have started their Labrador tour and are weather bound in Makkovik.
Jaaji Okpik says that they will be travelling to Nain hopefully today, weather permitting for their first performance of the tour.
If the weather cooperates for them to arrive today, they hope to have their concert tonight at 7 pm.
They performed at the Makkovik arena last night for the public as part of the Youth Symposium that was being held.
March 6th, they’ll be heading to Hopedale.
And they’ll be on their way to Postville on March 7th.
For their last performance on the tour, they’ll be heading down to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL.

Racers for the 2018 Cain’s Quest Snowmobile Endurance Race started their long journey across Labrador in Lab City today.
Kristie Holwell is the checkpoint official for Nain.
Racers are expected to arrive in Nain, NL, Check Point 4 of the race, on Sunday, March 4.
They will have a 12 hours layover in Nain.
Holwell says that yesterday, the volunteers put some markers up from southern point up to the dock here, and on up to the Jeremias Sillett Centre.
The markers are to guide the racers into town.
They’re also for safety purposes, because the racers are going to be coming in off the ice at high speeds.
