Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative and the board members held their meeting for the spring last week.

Keith Watts is the General Manager.

He says the meeting took two days, and took place Monday, March 26 and Tuesday, March 27, 2018.

Watts says the issues talked about were the financial statements, operations for the two fish plants in Nain and Makkovik, fish quotas, engineers for the two plants, and some training.

He says there were representatives from the Nunatsiavut Government, and also from Mercers Seafood, and GXT, a seismic company.

Watts says the board decided to hold the Community meeting in mid-April, and their Annual General Meeting in Hopedale in the first week of May.

The National Film Board of Canada’s Quebec and Atlantic Studio and LJH Films are reaching out to emerging and established Nunatsiavummiut filmmakers from or in Labrador who have an interest in documentary storytelling, with a call for submissions for the Labrador Doc Project.

Three participants will be chosen to direct their own short films in Nunatsiavut, plus there are opportunities for applicants in a wide range of filmmaking positions.

The Labrador Doc Project is looking for stories that surprise-and deepen Inuit’s understanding of them.

The Project’s goal is to collaborate with established and emerging Nunatsiavummiut artists, ages 18 and up.

The Labrador Doc Project will support projects that are 10-15 minutes in length, located in Nunatsiavut, realized over five shooting days.

Project directors are invited to e-mail a short proposal to Stephen Agluvak Puskas at s.puskas@nfb.ca, stating the story ideas, your personal connection to them, and why you want to tell these stories, no later than April 13, 2018.

NFB producers will choose three stories and notify the successful applicants by May 4, 2018.

The Easter games in Nain, NL started Saturday March 31st, and run until Sunday April 8, 2018.

Today’s events start with Children’s Carnival Day at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre (JSCC) at 1 pm, which finishes at 3 pm.

Also at 1 pm, Adult Ice Games take place at the Nain Harbour.

At 5 pm, there will be a Recreation Radio Bingo with a jackpot to go of $1000.

The Adult Inuit Games for ages 13 and up will end off today’s events at 7 pm at the JSCC.

Children’s and Adult’s Ice games will be on the ice tomorrow starting at 1 pm.

Canteen Services by various sponsors will be available throughout the games.

Easter games fees are Adults 13 years and up: $3 per event, Youth 12 years and under: $1 per event, and seniors 55 plus are free.

Easter passes are available at the NICG, and can be used for free admission into the Easter games.

Adults passes are $10, Youth Passes are $5, and seniors 55 plus are free.

Nominations closed yesterday at 2 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time for candidates seeking election as Ordinary Members to the Nunatsiavut Assembly.

Elections will be held May 1, 2018 in the Constituencies of Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Rigolet, Upper Lake Melville and Canada.

Two seats are available in Nain, Upper Lake Melville and Canada, while one seat is available in all other Constituencies.

There will be no election in the Constituency of Makkovik, where incumbent Kate Mitchell has been acclaimed.

At the close of nominations, there were no female candidates in the Constituencies of Nain and Postville.

As a result, Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe has been contacted by the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer, and will undertake to nominate a female candidate as per the Act.

Labrador-Grenfell Health is working hard in dealing with the TB situation in Nain.

The community is very concerned about this issue.

Dr. Gabe Woolham is a Physician for TB, and also the Vice-President of Medical Services at Labrador-Grenfell Health.

Sylvia Doody is the Director of Health Services for the Nunatsiavut Department of Health and Social Development.

They say the contact tracing and screening of TB has been ongoing, with hundreds of people being screened so far.

OK Radio will only be on air until 3 pm today for Holy Week, and will only be airing the following Church services:

To set off the games, a Men’s and women’s Volleyball Tournament starts on Saturday at 1 pm.

The next events will be held on Monday April 2, 2018 at 12:30 with Children’s and Adult’s Ice Games.

Adults Evening events will be at JSCC starting at 6, and an Adult’s Card game will be also going on the same time.

On Tuesday, the games will start at 1 pm at the JSCC, with a Children’s Carnival Day, and at the same time, Adult’s Ice games will take place.

Public Health would like to pass along the following information about Tuberculosis (TB) to the community of Nain, NL:

TB is not a new disease. It is a disease found all over the world.

TB is a disease caused by a bacteria that is too small to seen.

TB is spread when a person who has active TB disease coughs or sneezes. To get infected, you will have to spend many hours every day with someone who has TB. You cannot get infected with TB by shaking hands, touching things that belong to people who have TB or sharing dishes with someone who has active disease.

Sharing smoking devices such as cigarettes, third lungs, and bongs spread TB germs.

Not all people who come in contact with TB germs get sick with active TB disease. This is called a sleeping (latent) TB infection – you are not sick and you can¬not spread it to anyone else.

A positive TB skin test does not mean that you have active TB or that you are infectious and able to spread the disease to family and friends. It means that you will need a CXR and spit samples collected to rule out active disease. It is really important that you work with public health to complete all of your follow up.

A person infected with active TB disease may lose weight, not want to eat, feel very tired, sweat during the night, have a cough, and/or cough up blood. If you have any of these symptoms please make an appointment at the LGH Regional Community Clinic.

TB can be cured by taking medicine. It is important that you take all of your medication.

It is important to work with public health to complete all of your tests and to take all of your medications for your own health as well as the health of your family, friends and community.

It is the last day to nominate an Ordinary Member to the Nunatsiavut Assembly.

Nominations for candidates close at 2 pm today.

Nannette Blake is the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer.

She says the office has received nominations for candidates from the towns, and for the Canadian Constituency.

Blake says there may be more nominations received today before 2 pm when it closes.

She says to date, the numbers of nominated candidates confirmed are as follows:

For Nain – 3, Hopedale – 3, Makkovik – 1, Postville – 1, Rigolet – 2, Upper Lake Melville – 5 and the Canadian Constituency – 5.
