The Easter Games in Nain are now into day 4 of the events.

Today started off with a Children’s lunch at 12 noon, which runs until 3 pm at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre.

The lunch consists of hotdogs, juice and jell-o.

It is also Crazy Hat Day for ages 12 and under only.

Children are asked to register their hats.

There is an Easter Egg Hunt as well that also started at 12 noon, and prizes will be awarded.

And the Children’s Easter Glow in the Dark Dance Party also started at 12 noon, and will run until 3 pm as well.

An Adult Merchandise Bingo/Cash Bingo for ages 16 and up starts at 5 pm.

Doors will open at 4:45 pm.

Minute to Win It is set to go at 7 pm.

And right after that, the Beauty Pageant is the last of the events for tonight.

Participants for the pageant must have a talent to perform.

Advance polls for the May 1, 2018 general election for Ordinary Members to the Nunatsiavut Assembly will be held from 8 am to 8 pm, April 23, 2018 in the Constituencies of Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Rigolet and Upper Lake Melville (ULM).

Advance polls in Upper Lake Melville will be held in North West River and at the Labrador Friendship Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL.

Officials with the Nunatsiavut Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD), in partnership with Labrador-Grenfell Health, will hold a public information session in Nain at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre from 1-3 pm on Friday, April 6, 2018 to discuss issues around Tuberculosis.

Key people attending the meeting will include Dr. Gabe Woollam and Dr. Delphine Grynszpan of Labrador-Grenfell Health, and Sylvia Doody and Tina Buckle of the Nunatsiavut Government.

Members of the public who have questions or concerns about Tuberculosis are urged to attend.

Transportation on the north coast of Labrador will be getting some improvements from this year’s provincial budget.

The provincial government has plans to extend the marked snowmobile trail on the north coast of Labrador.

The marked trail already runs from Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Rigolet, Postville, Makkovik and Hopedale.

Next year, it will be extended from Hopedale to Natuashish, and on to Nain.

We will have more information on the extension of the marked snowmobile trail once it becomes available.

The Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD) in Makkovik and Hopedale has programs on the go.

Linda Pottle is the Team Leader for DHSD in her community.

She says they just had their staff meeting for the month of April and looked over the calendar for the month.

Pottle says they have three youth groups on the go, which get together on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

She adds they will have a senior’s dinner tomorrow.

They also have many other activities planned for April.

In Hopedale, Mckinley Winters is the Team Leader for DHSD.

He says as of right now, they have the Kids in Kitchens program, and they are also working on hydroponic seeding of garden beds.

Winters says they also have youth on the go almost every day.

The Easter games in Nain, NL started Saturday March 31st, and run until Sunday April 8, 2018.

Due to the weather, the events for today will be held up the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre (JSCC).

Today’s games will start at 1 pm for Children, and include the Dizzy Race, Leap Frog, Crab Race, Running Race, Four Legged Race, etc.

Adult’s games will be outside of the building also at 1 pm, with games such as Egg Toss, Crab Race, Jump Rope Race, Back/Back Race, etc.

Adult evening events go tonight at the JSCC from 7 to 10 pm, featuring many games, including Pass the Parcel, Musical Chairs, and the Numbers game.

There will be a children’s lunch tomorrow at the JSCC at noon featuring hotdogs, juice and Jell-o.

Canteen Services by various sponsors will be available throughout the games.

Easter games fees are Adults 13 years and up: $3 per event, Youth 12 years and under: $1 per event, and seniors 55 plus are free.

Easter passes are available at the NICG, and can be used for free admission into the Easter games.

Adults passes are $10, Youth Passes are $5, and seniors 55 plus are free.

The Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival is starting this evening, and runs until Saturday April 7, 2018.

The Festival will start with a community feast at 5 pm, which is sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD).

At 6 pm, there will be a traditional dress contest followed by a beauty pageant.

There will be a community Breakfast tomorrow morning from 7 to 9 am.

Bingo cards will also be sold from 2 to 5 pm.

All events will be held at the Nanuk Community Centre (NCC).

There have been no additional candidates for Ordinary Members added after the nominations for the Nunatsiavut Assembly were extended.

The nominations closed on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 2 pm.

At the close of nominations – As per Section 33 (1) of the Nunatsiavut Election Act:

If, at the close of the time for nominating candidates… there is not at least one female candidate for election in each constituency, the Returning Officer shall immediately notify the President and the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer in writing and the President shall take reasonable steps to nominate a female candidate for election in each constituency no later than 48 hours following the close of the time for nomination of candidates.

Elections will be held in all constituencies, except for Makkovik, where incumbent Kate Mitchell has been acclaimed.

The General Election Day for Ordinary Members to the Nunatsiavut Assembly is Tuesday, May 1, 2018.
