One Confirmed Case of TB in Nain

The TB-stricken North coast community of Nain, NL is finally going to be getting an X-Ray machine.

Labrador-Grenfell Health and the Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD) held a community meeting last Friday, April 6, 2018 to brief Nain residents on the latest news about the current Tuberculosis (TB) crisis.

The meeting took place from about 1 to 3 pm at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre in Nain.

The key principles in attendance were Dr. Gabe Woollam and Dr. Delphine Grynszpan of Labrador-Grenfell Health and Sylvia Doody, Director of Health Services for DHSD.

According to Dr. Woollam, a mobile x-ray machine is on its way to Nain.

The machine is being brought in as a result of the latest TB crisis in the isolated Nunatsiavut community.

There is no definite timeline for the x-ray machine to be operational, since it will have to be connected and tested.

Due to potential bandwidth issues, it’s not known at this time if the full-resolution x-ray images will be able to be uploaded, or of high enough quality to use.

Dr. Woolam also informed the fairly large gathering that there are two workers from the Public Health Lab in Winnipeg in town looking at the possibility of bringing in a GeneXpert machine as well.

The machine would allow doctors to test sputum from residents in the community immediately, without having to send samples to a lab in Winnipeg to be tested, a process that currently takes eight weeks.

In addition, Dr. Woolam said that there is now a new treatment being used on latent, or sleeping, TB patients in Labrador.

The treatment, called 3HP, is a combination of a new drug, Rifapentine, and INH, a common medication for TB.

Dr. Woolam revealed that over 430 people in Nain have been screened for TB so far during the latest crisis.

Of those, there has been one confirmed case of TB, five probable cases, and seven possible cases of the disease.

Officials with the Nunatsiavut Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD), in partnership with Labrador-Grenfell Health, will hold a public information session in Nain at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre that started at 1, and runs until 3 pm today to discuss issues around Tuberculosis.

Key people attending the meeting will include Dr. Gabe Woollam and Dr. Delphine Grynszpan of Labrador-Grenfell Health, and Sylvia Doody and Tina Buckle of the Nunatsiavut Government.

Members of the public who have questions or concerns about Tuberculosis are urged to attend.

Retired Judge James Igloliorte has been visiting Residential School Survivors on the north and south coast through February, and March.

The purpose of these visits is to collect stories of the experiences of students who attended residential schools.

Igloliorte will be in Nain, NL on Thursday, April 12 for a community feast from 6 to 8 pm at the Jeremias Sillett community centre.

A sharing circle will be held on Friday, April 13 at the Parks Canada building’s Pulâpvik Room (with lunch provided) from 9 am to 5 pm.

Individual Sessions will also take place at the Pulâpvik room on Saturday, April 14 from 9 am to 5 pm.

The Easter Sports started last Saturday in Makkovik and finished up on Easter Monday this week.

John Andersen is the Recreation Director.

He says the fun games were all held throughout Saturday.

The fun games included children from ages 2-5, 6-9, 10-15, and the adults.

Andersen says the dog team races and shooting match were held on Easter Monday, and they finished up with the running races.

He says there was a good turnout of participants and observers in all the games.

The scheduled events for the Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival in Hopedale that was supposed to be today, April 6th are now postponed until tomorrow April 7th.

The scheduled events for tomorrow, April 7th are also postponed until April 8th.

The Easter Games in Nain are now into day 5 of the events.

Today started off with a movie day for Children at 1 pm at the JSCC.

The movie is “Peter Rabbit”.

Tonight there will be Adult Events at the Jeremias Sillett Community Center (JSCC) – a Pool tournament and a Dart tournament.

Tomorrow, Skidoo Races take off at the Nain Harbour starting at 1 pm.

Adult Ice games will be going on at the same time.

A Recreation Giant Radio Bingo goes tomorrow at 8 pm, with $5000 to go.

On Sunday, there will be a Community Breakfast from 9 to 11 am, then a sliding party at 11:30, both at the JSCC.

At 1 pm, target shooting will take place across the harbour; this is open to men and women.

To end off the events, there will be an adult evening event night at 7 pm at the JSCC.

An Awards Night with door prizes will take place at the JSCC on Tuesday April 10, 2018, at 7 pm, followed by Family Fireworks in the Nain harbour at 8 pm.

The Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival started in Hopedale last evening, and runs until Saturday April 7, 2018.

They started off today’s events with a Community breakfast from 7am to 9 am this morning.

At 4 pm, a Target and Skeet Shoot Competition takes place.

Bingo is a go at 7 pm, and cards are on sale starting at 2 pm and going until 5 pm.

Cards can be purchased at either the Nanuk Community Centre or the Fire Hall.
