The Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD) in Makkovik will be hosting its Annual Mental Health Fair tomorrow, Tuesday May 29, 2018 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the J.C Erhardt Makkovik school gym.

The DHSD team will have displays on different mental health topics.

Organizations within Makkovik will also have displays up as well.

All are welcome to attend.

There is a chance to win a door prize of an Asus Chromebook laptop.

Nunatsiavut Group of Companies (NGC) executives have rescheduled the community information sessions that were postponed in late March due to poor weather.

Chris Webb is President and CEO of NGC.

Leaders of the various NGC companies, including himself, will hold public meetings in all five Nunatsiavut communities beginning today, May 28 in Nain.

A key part of the upcoming visits will be school visits.

It’s the first time that they are going into the schools.

Tomorrow, they will be in Hopedale at the Nanuk Center at 7 pm.

Wednesday May 30th, NGC will be in Postville at 12 pm at the Community Hall, and at 7 pm they will be in Makkovik at the Old Community Hall.

They will end off their tour at 12 pm in Rigolet on May 31st.

The information session will take place at the Seniors Building.

The Nunatsiavut Government is recommending that Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement refrain from harvesting migratory birds in the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area after May 31, 2018.

Based on previous discussions with experienced hunters in Labrador Inuit communities, the Nunatsiavut Government is recommending that the spring harvest be kept to a minimum.

Hunters should exercise good conservation practices and not exceed four (4) Canada geese and eight (8) freshwater ducks and divers per household.

Please keep in mind that this is the mating season, and migratory birds should be harvested accordingly.

Harvesting of Harlequin Duck (Lords and Ladies) is prohibited.

Conservation Officers will be monitoring the harvest of migratory birds.

The Torngat Regional Housing Association (TRHA) has made selections for new homes in Hopedale.

William Lucy is the Coordinator.

He says so far, Hopedale is the only town where selections have been made.

Lucy says the three new homes to be constructed this summer include a three bedroom home for Cassie Vincent and Henry Nochasak.

Victoria Winters and William Dicker, and Zack and Tabea Karpik are selected for two bedroom homes.

Lucy adds there will be renovations done to one home for Roger Flowers and Joshua Kaunak due to a fire in the home.

The Nunatsiavut Government Assembly Sitting was held in Hopedale last week.

At that time, the newly elected ordinary members were sworn in.

Johannes Lampe is the President of the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says the Nunatsiavut Assembly re-elected the First Minister, Kate Mitchell of Makkovik.

Lampe says the newly elected and appointed members started their new positions within NG after they were sworn in.

On May 23, 2018 at approximately 9:00 am, Sheshatshiu RCMP received a complaint from Lake Melville School regarding a social media post with a potential threat to Sheshatshiu Innu School and Lake Melville School.

As a precaution, both schools were put into hold and secure mode.

As a result of an investigation, a 13-year-old male youth, who cannot be identified under the provisions of the youth criminal justice act, was arrested without incident at his residence.

The schools were then released from hold and secure mode.

The youth has been released to his guardian with conditions, and on a Youth Promise to Appear in Happy Valley-Goose Bay Provincial Court later in July 2018.

The police have determined that there is no threat to the Sheshatshiu Innu School, Lake Melville School or the public.

The second film being screened is Inuuvunga: I Am Inuk, I Am Alive.

Eight Inuit teens with cameras offer a vibrant and contemporary view of life in Canada’s North.

They also use their newly acquired film skills to confront a broad range of issues, from the widening communication gap between youth and their elders, to the loss of their peers to suicide.

The 10th Annual CYN and Mr. Volleyball Tournament will be held in Nain this weekend.

The tournament will be held at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre (JSCC) and will be starting at 5 pm on Friday, May 25, 2018.

There are six women’s teams and five men’s teams entered.

One of the tournament rules is that each team must provide a referee and linesmen out of respect to Mister.

The Hebron Family Archaeology Project is now into its third year.

Residents of Nain are invited to attend a meeting to discuss last year’s project and to help design research plans for this year.

The discussion is tomorrow, Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 3 pm at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre.
