Tuberculosis Meeting Taking Place Soon

Officials with the Nunatsiavut Department of Health and Social Development and the Labrador-Grenfell Health Authority will hold a public meeting to provide an update on Tuberculosis.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre in Nain from 1 to 3 pm.

Nunatsiavut Executive Council Open House Coming Up

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Lands Claims Agreement are welcome to attend an Open House to meet with the President and Ministers of the Nunatsiavut Executive Council.

The Open House will take place in Nain, Nunatsiavut on Monday June 4, 2018 at 7 pm at the Nunatsiavut Government Administration Building in the Main Boardroom.

Refreshments will be available as well.

Community Consolations for the Hebron Family Archaeology Project Held (Audio)

There were community consultations for the 3rd year of the Hebron Archaeology project held in Nain last week.

Michelle Davies is the Archaeology Assistant with the Nunatsiavut Government.

She said that they had a really good turnout and lots of good discussion and direction for the project this year.

One of the main things that she wanted to ask was whether people were interested in the artifacts that are at the Hebron church right now.

Start-up of the 2018 North Coast of Labrador Freight and Passenger Service Impacted by Ice

Nunatsiavut Marine would like to advise the public that the start-up of the 2018 freight and passenger service is expected to be impacted by unfavorable ice conditions on the North Coast of Labrador.

They will continue to monitor the ice conditions.

Tentative start dates for passenger service and the acceptance of freight will be announced once conditions are expected to improve.

Building Strength Leadership Workshop for Inuit Women Today

Inuit women are leaders in their families and communities, and should represent Inuit in government.

That’s according to organizers of leadership workshops for Inuit women.

Maggie Burton (St. John’s City Councillor) and Caitlin Urquhart (Lawyer) will be facilitating the workshops in each Nunatsiavut Community.

Join them to learn how you can support women running for political office, and how you can be a local leader.

They will be in Nain at the Nunatsiavut Government Admin Building boardroom today.

Today’s Nain session will be from 1:15 to 4:15 pm, and participants are encouraged to stay from 4:15 to 6:15 for small group or one-on-one work.

Torngat Fisheries AGM Update (Audio)

Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative annual general meeting went well in Hopedale last week.

Keith Watts is the General Manager.

He says there was a good turnout at the AGM.

Watts says the discussions included the financial report, minutes of last year, the fishery and the quotas and the two fish plants.

Information Session Taking Place for the Community of Nain on Inukitut and Ilusivut in the JHMS Schools

Representatives from the Nunatsiavut Government and the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District will hold an information session on June 19, 2018 at 7 pm at the Nunatsiavut Government boardroom in Nain, NL.

The purpose of this meeting will be to provide information about the roles of the Inuktitut and ilusivut positions in both the big school and small schools in Nain.

There are vacant positions in these areas that need to be filled.

They are also interested in meeting and speaking with potential candidates for these positions.

Please come out to learn how you could possibly be a part of strengthening the Inuktitut language and culture at Jens Haven Memorial School.

Illusuak Update: Parks Canada Moves In (Audio)

Parks Canada Staff have moved into their new location at the Illusuak building.

Jim Lyall is the Minister of Culture, Recreation and Tourism for the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says the new building will be completed by late fall.

Lyall says the grand opening is expected to happen in December.
