Notice for Nominations for AngajukKâk in Nain

Nain Inuit Community Government has issued a public notice on the nominations for AngajukKâk.

Notice is hereby given by the Inuit Community Government of Nain that nominations will be accepted for the position of AngajukKâk for the upcoming Election to be held on the 11th day of September, 2018 at the NICG office/meeting room.

They started their nominations on Tuesday, the 14th day of August, 2018 between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm and will close today, Tuesday, the 21st of August, 2018.

During the aforesaid dates with the exception of the days Saturday and Sunday.

Bake Apple Picking Time (Audio)

The Bake Apples are starting to ripen along the coast again.

Ok radio spoke to several people from Nunatsiavut about how well the berries are growing this year.

All say it looks like a good season but a bit later then usual.

We spoke to four in English and one in Inuktitut.

Indigenous Art Collection

The Government of Canada has released a new book called “The Indigenous Art Collection: Selected Works 1967- 2017” which showcases the incredible work of indigenous artists and curators of the collection.

This book shows the Indigenous Art Centre’s continuing efforts to honour and promote Indigenous artwork in Canada and Internationally.

According to their website the book features the artwork of the following artists from Nunatsiavut and ULM:

John Terriak of Nain, Dinah Andersen- Makkovik, Billy Gauthier, Garmel Rich and Michael Massie all from HVGB, Heather Cambell- Rigolet, and Barry Pottle from North West River.

Public Notice for Nain

It has come to the attention of the Nunatsiavut Government that residents (mostly children) are riding bicycles and ATV’s on the Boardwalk around the Illusuak Cultural Centre.

This is a safety concern, and residents are asked to stop such activities and to ensure to communicate this to your children.

If anyone is seen using a bicycle or ATV in that area, they will be asked to leave.

The Nunatsiavut Government thanks you for your cooperation in keeping our residents safe.

Community Freezer Update

The OK Society contacted the coastal community freezers along the coast to see what they have to offer.

In Nain, they have char and seal meat.

In Hopedale, they have frozen char and salmon, As well as smoked char and dried char.

In Postville, they have a few char and some cod.

In Rigolet, they have red berries, partridges, shrimp and cod.

DHSD in Nain Looking for Women to go Bake Apple Picking (Audio)

The Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD) in Nain is looking for women who would like to go bake apple picking.

Heather Angnatok is the Regional Youth Administrator for the DHSD in Nain.

She says she’s looking for six young women aged 18-30 and six elderly women to go on this trip.

Angnatok adds that she is looking for maybe five drivers and speedboats to rent as well.

If you have a speedboat that you wouldn’t mind renting out or would like to be a driver for the women, or would like to attend, you can contact Angnatok at 922-2126 extension 241.

NG President Congratulates Natan Obed on being Re-Elected President of ITK

Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe says he’s pleased to have the opportunity to continue working with newly re-elected Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President Natan Obed.

“During the past three years Natan has demonstrated his strong leadership abilities, both nationally and internationally, on matters of importance to all Inuit within Inuit Nunangat,” says President Lampe.

“He has proven time and time again that he is more than capable of handling every situation in which he finds himself with a sense of proportion. His straight-forward resolve to achieve solutions or desired results, combined Government, and indeed beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, I offer my congratulations to Natan in his re-election.”

Obed was re-elected to a second term by delegates from the four Inuit regions and the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada during ITK’s Annual General Meeting in Inuvik last week.

Bike Rodeo for Kids in Nain

The Department of Health and Social Development in Nain are holding a Bike Rodeo.

It will be held at the Playground on Wednesday, August 22 starting at 1:30 pm

It will be for children who are just learning to ride bikes and includes children up to the age of 14.

They have a 24″ youth bicycle, a 16″ kids bicycle, four helmets, and bicycle accessories to give away on that day.

Makkovik Fish Plant Update

Yesterday we had news on Nain Char fishery where production is better then last summer.

Today we spoke to Junior Andersen who is the Production Manager for Makkovik fish plant.

They are presently processing Turbot.

He says 26,166lbs of Turbot has been landed to date.

Andersen says there over 50 employees and 4 Turbot boats fishing.
