After-School Program Registration

After-School Program registration will take place on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at 6PM sharp.

Registration is on a first-come first-served basis. Parents are welcome to line up but there will be absolutely no early birds.

The After-School Program holds fifteen (15) seats for 5-7 Age Group and fifteen (15) seats for 8-12 Age Group. The age group for your child depends on the age she/he will be on December 31, 2018.

ASP runs Monday-Friday 3-4:45PM at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre and Program begins on Wednesday, September 5, 2018.

The After-School Program is FREE of charge and runs in partnership with Nain Inuit Community Government – Recreation Department and the Nunatsiavut Government Department of Health and Social Development.

Registration is not required for Night Program and any child aged 5-12 years old is welcome as long as they’re in their age group. There is no limit to how many children attend for Night Program.

RCMP Seize Liquor Destined for Natuashish

On August 22, 2018, in the early morning, Natuashish RCMP received information of a shipment of alcohol coming in on the Northern Ranger.

Once the vessel docked, police were directed to a piece of a passenger’s unclaimed luggage destined for Natuashish. The luggage was found to contain 22 bottles of liquor. To prevent the liquor from entering the community, police dumped out all bottles.

Natuashish RCMP would like to thank the crew of the Northern Ranger for their assistance and urge the public to contact them if they have any information regarding alcohol arriving in Natuashish.

Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant Update

The Nain fish plant is still busy with processing and smoking Char.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor.

39,278 lbs was the number landed last week and 44,806 lbs of Char has been landed to date.

She added there are 28 employees working and 5 fishermen fishing.

Makkovik fish plant is busy with Turbot.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager.

He says 159,194 lbs of Turbot has been landed to date.

Andersen added there are 36 employees working and 4 Turbot boat fishing.

All Fuel Prices Take a Dive

Gas prices are down across the board this week.

All types of gasoline are decreasing by up to 1.9 cents per litre (cpl) today while diesel motor fuel will decrease by up to 1.2 cpl.

Furnace and stove oil is dropping by just under a cent per litre.

And propane heating fuel will see a decrease by 1.4 cents per litre today.

Interview with Silver Wolf Band (Audio)

Silver Wolf Band is an Indigenous folk rock band based out of Goose Bay.

OK radio spoke with Mathew Barrett and Jamie Jackman two members out of the three of the silver wolf band.

The band sent in their album to be featured on OKalaKatiget society’s Radio broadcast.

Researchers in Nain (Audio)

There is Researchers from MUN doing research on the Char and Ducks in Nain.

DR. Max Liboiron and Natasha Healey are from MUN Geography.
Liboiron says the purpose of their trip to Nain is to do a research on Micro Plastics.

Statement by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President, Natan Obed on Canada’s First Poverty Reduction Strategy

I would like to congratulate Minister Duclos on the release of Canada’s First Poverty Reduction Strategy. I am happy to see that it includes Inuit-specific considerations based on ITK’s comprehensive January 2018 submission entitled “Inuit Perspective on a Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy.”

“We look forward to continued collaboration with the Government on addressing inequity for Inuit in Canada, including improving poverty related outcomes.

“In the coming weeks and months, we anticipate working with the Government to set out an approach for measuring progress, including the development of Inuit-specific indicators, based on the ambitious targets set out in the strategy.”

Some Relief at the Pumps Predicted This Week

It’s drops across the board for fuel this week, according to the predictions from the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices.

Gas and diesel are both heading down by over a cent, with gas predicted to fall 1.3 cents and diesel 1.1.

Heating and stove oil will go down as well, but by less than a cent (or 9/10s of a cent).

Bike Rodeo in Nain and Hopedale

The Department of Health and Social Development in Nain scheduled a Bike Rodeo for today but due to weather it is postponed.

The new scheduled date is Friday, August 24 starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Playground.

For children beginning to ride their bikes to children aged 14.

They have three bicycles to give away, also four draws of bicycle helmets and more draws of bicycle accessories!

The Nain RCMP will be doing some training and giving tips on Bicycle safety.

NDHSD hopes to see you there.

For Hopedale, the DHSD there will have their Bike Rodeo today at the Nanuk Centre which started at 1 pm and will finish at 3 pm.

All kids are welcome with a bike or no bike.
