NGC Community Meetings

The Nunatsiavut Group of Companies (NGC) executive’s team will be making their way to hold community information sessions this April.

The information sessions will take place in all 5 communities.

Their first stop this year will be in Rigolet; at the Community Centre on Monday April 1 starting at 7pm.

On April 2nd they will be in holding a session in Hopedale, at the Assembly Building Boardroom on at 7pm, And in Nain at the Pulâpvik Boardroom on April 3rd at 7pm.

In Makkovik at the Old Community Hall starting at 7pm on April 8; then in Postville, at the Community Centre at 12 noon on April 9.

There will be refreshments during each community sessions, and they would like to get feedback from your community.

Film “Grizzlies”

The Nunasi Corporation and the Canadian North will be presenting a film to Nain residents; and this film is based on true story, titled “The Grizzles”.

This free screening will be take place at the Jens Haven Memorial School gym on Thursday March 28, starting at 7pm.

We spoke with Ms. Juanita Skanes who is the Vice Principle at the JHM School.

Skanes says this film is an inspiring and uplifting movie that contains scenes of suicide, and physical violence.

She says children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

And this film is an inspiring story about Inuit youth starring young actors from Nunavut; this film opens nationwide this April.

Featuring music on the film are music artists such as Tanya Tagaq, Jerry Cans, 666 God, Hyper-T, Nelson Tagoona and Misterlee.

LWG update

Today marks day 4 for athletes who are competing in this year’s Labrador Winter Games events.

We spoke with Paul Motty the Execrative Director.

He says athletes competed in Ball Hockey yesterday morning and Lab City team took home Gold.

Motty says the Men and Women’s Cross Country Skiing was also completed yesterday morning, and the Happy Valley Goose Bay took home the Gold in both events.

On today’s agenda athletes began the Cross Country relay this morning, and for this afternoon will be the Snow Shoe Biathlon.

They started Table tennis today, and the Northern Games is scheduled for this evening.

He adds during the Northern Games athletes will compete in Labrador hurdles and over the rope.

39th annual dog team race

The 39th Annual Heritage Dog team race will be held in Makkovik on March 30, 2019.

Rachel Edmunds is one of the Volunteers for the Dog team race.

She says that as of right now there are five teams registered from Makkovik and Hopedale.

This year teams will have to pay a $20 fee, the fee money will go towards the prizes.

Edmunds says this year prizes will include: best looking team, first second third, fourth and fifth place.

We will have another update on the annual event next week.

Easter games & buttons

Easter is just around the corner.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director for Nain.

She says she is very busy with the schedule for this year’s Easter games.

There is no schedule set for the games yet, but she gave us a hint of what will be going on.

Ivany said the Easter games will be starting on the 20th to the 28th of April, and awards night will be on the 30th.

And for the buttons for the Easter games for ages 2-5 yrs old is $5, $10 for ages 13-54, and for seniors 55 and older is free.

Anyone wanting to buy a button can drop by the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre, debit & cash accepted, and at the Nain Inuit Community Government Office, is cash only.

There will also be a giant bingo on April 22nd with a prize of $5000 jackpot and cards will be selling for $100.

Full- Time Radio Producer wanted

The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening for a Radio Producer.

Under the supervision of the Senior Producer, the Radio Producer prepares new and current affairs items for daily broadcast on the Society’s radio network.

The Deadline for Radio Producer is tomorrow March 21, 2019 at 4:30pm.

Preferences will be given to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Inuktitut Terminology Workshop (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government Interpreter/Translator team is hosting an Inuktitut Terminology Workshop in Nain, from March 19-21, 2019.

They are hoping to cover the three topics related to governmental, tuberculosis (TB) and financial terms.

They will go through these terms, discuss them, and agree upon a standardized Inuktitut term that will be used within Nunatsiavut.

Nunatsiavut Johannes Lampe is attending this workshop and spoke to one of our OK Radio producers.

ITK Reacts To Inuit-Specific Investments in 2019 Budget

ITK welcomes Inuit-specific investments in Budget 2019 for suicide prevention, post-secondary education, and health and social services for Inuit children.

Proposed Inuit-specific investments total $395.5 million and include the following:

$50 million over 10 years for continued implementation of the National Inuit Suicide Prevention Strategy and $5 million per year ongoing;

$125.5 million over 10 years for an Inuit-led post-secondary education strategy and $21.8 million per year ongoing; and

$220 million over five years to provide important health and social services to Inuit children.

In addition, ITK is pleased with the commitment included in the budget to support universal high-speed internet access for all Canadians by 2030.

Archaeology presentation of the Torngats Mountains

There will be a presentation held tomorrow on the Archaeology and whale use research in the Torngat Mountains National Park.

Deirdre Elliott who is a PhD student with the University of MUN.

She says the presentation will be on the research of several sod house sites and what was to learn about the history of whale hunting.

Elliott says she used a drone and made 3D models of the sod house sites.

The presentation will be at the Nunatsiavut administration building in the boardroom tomorrow afternoon March 21 2019 from 2-3 pm in the boardroom.

Ethel Pijogge Memorial Dog Team Race 2019

The Ethel Pijogge Memorial Dog Team Race will be on April 12th, 2019 in Hopedale.

The Race will start at the Hopedale Harbour at 9am on that day.
