A new Municipal Enforcement Department in HVGB

The town of Happy Valley Goose Bay recently put in place a Municipal Enforcement Department which is a new complaints phone line for residents.

This new complaints Line phone number is 896-3322.

In the province of Newfoundland and Labrador Municipalities reserve the right to employ and swear in Municipal Constables (Community Constables).

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay Community Constables responds to a wide variety of situations that fall under a variety of laws and legislation.

Community Constables are Peace Officers as defined under the Criminal Code, employed for the preservation and protection of the public peace as well as Civil Service.

Community Constables are heavily involved in the community with educational programs like Bike rodeos, School presentations, and other public related issues.

So if residents in Happy Valley Goose Bay need to send out a complaint for any of the following they can call the complaint number.

The public of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is encouraged to call the complaint line 896-3322 for situations such as: Animal Control, Animal Welfare, Noise complaints, Loitering, Vagrants, Property Issues, Traffic concerns, Speeding complaints, ATV / Snowmobile and other off-road vehicle complaints

World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity for those who’ve experienced suicide attempts or loss to join together to promote understanding about suicide and highlight effective prevention activities.

We contacted the DHSD offices in each community to see what activities they have planned for this event.

Yesterday we had the activities for Nain and Makkovik; here are the activities for Hopedale, Postville, and Rigolet.

Frances Boas is the Mental Health Worker with DHSD in Hopedale.

She says starting at 6:30pm, there will be a Motivational Speaker presented by Lito Libre followed by an Ice Breaker at 7:30 at the Nanuk Centre.

Kayla Andersen, Community Health Worker in Postville.

She says everyone is asked to meet at the DHSD at 7pm tonight, they will be going around town, and meeting back at the DHSD.

A movie night will also be held for youth ages 14 and up featuring The Grizzlies.

Andersen adds that candles will be given out at the DHSD throughout the day until 4:30 pm.

Pam Campbell is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker in Rigolet.

She says everyone is asked to meet at the playground at 6pm this evening.

They will walk to the net loft, return to the playground and gather to have some refreshments; candles will also be lit at 8pm in their windows.

The Flummies (Audio)

The Nain Inuit Community Government invited the Flummies to Nain, who performed during the 1st Tusannituk Music Festival.

Leander Baikie is a long time member of the Flummies.

He came by to our studio to give us information about his trip to Nain.

He says that this year marks 41 year the Flummies are together as a band.

TB Update for Nain (Audio)

The Nain DHSD has been busy with follow-ups with the community since the TB outbreak last year, 2018.

We spoke with Megan Hudson who is the TB Public Health Nurse for Nain.

She says since the outbreak last year, more than 80% out of 90 have been seen but are still in the working progress.

Hudson says that they are also having chest x-ray technicians come in from Goose Bay on a regular basis.

Coastal Freezers

The OKâlaKatiget Radio contacted some of the north coast communities to see what they have to offer in their community freezers.
In the Hopedale Community Freezer, they have char, capelin, and porpoise.

In Postville, they have Char.

And in Rigolet, they have crab claws, shrimp, char, bake apples and red berries.

The OK Radio will have Nain and Makkovik freezers once they become available.

Key Assets in Nain

Key Assets Newfoundland and Labrador is a non profit organization providing residential care and support services for young people and families with complex needs.

The Nunatsiavut Government and CSSD are in partnership with Key Assets.

We spoke with Dave Martin who is the Director of Children and Families Services with Key Assets for the Labrador Region.

He says their main goal is to help young children and youth who are in involved with CSSD care to be kept in their home communities.

Key Assets was established in Newfoundland and Labrador for over 10 years since January, 2009.

And right now they have a Key Assets in their community of Hopedale, and they have been in operation now since 2016.

Martin says they recently had 3 job positions out for the community of Nain.

Key Assets were asked by CSSD to open a home in Nain for children who are in care and would like to live in their home town.

He adds that the positions are full time positions, 2 child care positions and possible a third position that will be part time.

They are leasing a home in Nain and they main goal is to help young children and youth who are in care to live in their own communities.

Scallop Boat Update

The Scallop boat arrived to Nain last week on the Barge.

John Ikkusek is the Manager for the fish plant.

He says there are two trainers training John W Andersen and Martin Andersen how to use the boat, the equipment and buckets.

Ikkusek adds they are testing out the scallop boat and whenever the weather clears up, they will go scalloping.

Nunatsiavut Marine Cut Off Shipping Season

The Nunatsiavut Marine Inc would like to announce their cut off dates for the 2019 shipping season.

Please note that Nunatsiavut Marine will continue to accept freight for shipping to the North Coast based on available space and routing as long as conditions allow.

However, delivery of items received after the deadline cannot be guaranteed.

We spoke with someone from Labrador Marine but they would like to remain anonymous.

The cut-off date for the acceptance of commercial and residential freight for the 2019 shipping season is November 8, 2019.

Delivery of freight accepted after this date cannot be guaranteed.

The Nunatsiavut Marine would like to advise their customers that the winter storage of personal items will no longer be available.

They would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

World Suicide Prevention Walk

There will be a World Suicide Prevention Walk here in Nain tomorrow, Sept. 10, 2019.

Rutie Lampe is the Mental Health & Addictions Worker for DHSD.

She says starting at 6:15pm, anyone wanting to participate in this walk will meet by the Nain DHSD building.

T-shirts will also be given along with a proclamation by the AngajukKâk of Nain, Joe Dicker.

At the church service, one of the activities will be putting yellow hearts on a tree and writing their name and good memory about a loved one.

Lampe adds that at 8pm, there will be an International Lighting of Candle in the Window in memory of loved ones.

So, join in on tomorrow, September 10 and help support this World Suicide Prevention Walk.

We also have the Makkovik World Suicide Prevention event.

Tomorrow starting at 6PM they will go ahead with their Community Walk, and you meet at the DHSD building, but depending on the weather they will meet at the arena.

They will give out yellow and Orange ribbons for you to use.

At 8PM they will have a Community Candle on your window.

New Health Counselor for Nain

The Department of Health and Social Development and the Labrador Grenfell Health Association would like to inform our audience that they now have a new LGH Health Counselor for Nain.

Courtney Ryder is the new LGH Health Counselor for Nain.

She recently arrived to Nain to start her new position.
