Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey Data Collection Kick-Off Event in Hopedale (Dated October 5, 2022)

The Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey (QNIHS) is hosting a community meet-and-greet in Hopedale today, October 5 at the Nanuk Centre from 6-8pm.

This event is a celebration of the start of data collection for the Nunatsiavut region of the QNIHS.

We welcome the community to this public event to introduce the QNIHS fieldworker team.

There will be smoked char and other light refreshments for the community as well as a meet and greet event with the QNIHS team and representatives of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami National Inuit Committee on Health.

Data collection is schedule to take place at the Nanuk Center from October 6-20, 2022, and may be extended depending on weather.

If you name is randomly selected, a representative from the QNIHS team will reach out to you.

There will be wellness supports and transportation available at each data collection site.

Surveys can take anywhere from 60-90 minutes and Inuktitut translations will also be available as required.

The Nunatsiavut QNIHS team is looking forward to seeing everyone in Hopedale and other Labrador Inuit communities.

NL Reports Cases (Dated October 5, 2022)

Four more people have passed away due to COVID-19 over the past week in NL, raising the provinces total of deaths to 245 since the beginning of March 2020.

Of the 4 people were in their 70’s in Eastern Health region and 1 was 80 or older in Western.

Hospitalizations have dropped from 13 last week to 8 this week including 1 person in critical care, down from 2 last week.

The province also confirmed 193 new cases of COVID-19 over the past week. However, those numbers don’t accurately represent the full spread of the pandemic as the province has restricted PCR tests administered by Health Authorities, and the case numbers don’t include positive results from rapid tests people take themselves.

Pauktuutit News

Pauktuutit, Inuit Women of Canada says members of the Pauktuutit’s programs teams were honored to attend the Qarjuit Youth Council Annual General Meeting in #Ivujivik this week.

They say they came to hear Qajuit’s and the communities’ concerns and priorities regarding cannabis in # Nunavik.

Pauktuutit says they were lucky to stay and wear #OrangeShirts to mark the #NationaDayforTruthand Reconciliation the community.

Nain Parka Making Workshop

The Nunatsiavut Government presents a Nain Parka Making Workshop.

This will be held from October 21-24, 2022 at the Illusuak Cultural Centre.

There are 10 seats available for anyone who would like to participate and the deadline is October 17, 2022.

Nain Airport Information Session

The Nunatsiavut Government is planning to build a new certified airport for the community of Nain.

The Nunatsiavut Government will host an information session on the project today October 4, 2022, at the Nunatsiavut Government administration building from 6:30-8pm.

The new airport will replace the existing infrastructure that is currently under stress from the impacts of climate change.

Studies have determined that the existing runway is unsafe and cannot be expanded or upgraded.

This project is presently at the stage of feasibility studies, which should be completed by June 2024.

Twelve feasibility studies will be conducted, of which three have been completed.

This information session will provide a brief presentation of past, current and future studies completed around the project and will allow time for the public to ask questions pertaining to the new proposed airstrip.

Cruise Ship In

The cruise ship, Adventure Canada arrived in Nain early this morning.

Two of the Brassband players were on the beach to greet them coming ashore in the cruise ship dingys.

The tourists from the ship requested to hear the Nain Choir and Brassband at the Moravian Church at 9 am.

The church was packed with tourists from the ship in their royal blue colored jackets .

Joan Dicker choir member and Tony Andersen, Minister of Education and Economic Development for Nunatsiavut Government did a speech and welcomed the tourists.

The choir sang two hymns: Initsalik and IlanaKaKa Jesutut, while Mary Binky Andersen played the organ for the choir, to lots of applause.

The event took about an hour and then the tourists continued their tour around Nain on this windy morning, with clouds of sand blowing everywhere.

Nunatsiavut Assembly Sitting (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Assembly was held in Hopedale on September 21st, 2022.

Bryan Winters is the Speaker for the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says it was a two-day meeting to recognise the affiliation between the HMCS Margaret Brooke and people from Nunatsiavut.

There was a Kullik lighting by our Minister of Language Culture and Tourism, Roxanne Barbour, as well as some drum dancing.

Winters adds that Gus Semigak did the opening followed by a speech from the AngajukKâk of Hopedale, Marjorie Flowers.

Executive Director/Radio Producer Job Ad

The OKâlaKatiget Society has two employment opportunities for the positions of a full-time permanent Executive Director and Radio Producer.

Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director co-ordinates all administrative and policy activity to ensure that the OKâlaKatiget Society meets its goals and objectives.

The Radio Producer prepares news, current affairs for daily broadcast on the Society’s radio network and the salary will be dependant on qualifications.

The Nain community freezer has partridge, char.

The Hopedale community freezer has musk ox, caplin, premium plus crackers, goldfish snacks, KD, Black beans, chickpeas.

The Postville community freezer has cod fish, salmon.

The Makkovik community freezer has few cod, char, little bit of smoke char.

The Rigolet community freezer has cod fillets, shrimp.
