Pauktuutit Struggling With Programs Since Funding Cuts

Pauktuutit has been struggling to deliver their programs since the federal government slashed the organization’s funding earlier this year.

Tracy O’Hearn is the Executive Director of the organization responsible for representing the Inuit women of Canada.

She says the federal government cut their budget by about $800, 000 this past spring.

The funding was used to provide programming that addressed a number of issues including Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and HIV prevention.

O’Hearn says it’s important to provide Inuit with HIV information because they have the highest sexually transmitted infection rates in the country.

The funding cuts also halted Pauktuutit’s plans to create a five-year strategic plan that would address issues such as FASD and HIV.

O’Hearn says the cuts have had a huge effect on reaching their mandate of providing culturally-appropriate programs to Inuit.
