Nunatsiavut Volunteer Fire Departments

We spoke with fire chiefs along the coast to see how they’re doing for volunteers and to ask for safety advice during Christmas Season.

George Lyall, Assistant Fire Chief of Nain, says they have 21 volunteers at the moment and are looking for three more to replace the three who are often working at Voisey’s Bay.

Lyall adds people need to water the tree, do not overload plug ins or leave candles burning.

Martin Basto, Fire Chief of Hopedale, says they have full brigade of 16 volunteers.

Barry Andersen, Fire Chief of Makkovik, says they too have a full brigade of 14 volunteers.

Andersen adds the following safety tips; check smoke alarms, extension cords in good working order, know fire department number, have fire extinguisher and escape plan for fire, and most importantly keep woodstove free of clutter.

Richard Pottle, Fire Chief of Rigolet, has 10 volunteers full time altogether and six more on the waiting list.
The reason they have the waiting list is to cut expense. Rigolet Fire Brigade also cleans people’s chimneys, which is important in avoiding chimney fires. Pottle adds to turn off Christmas lights when you’re not around, especially the ones inside.
