Number of Polar Bear Licenses Increased for 2012 Season

The Nunatsiavut government has released this year’s polar bear quota.

12 polar bear licenses are available to Nunatsiavut beneficiaries for the 2012 season.

That amount is an increase from the 11 licenses issued during the 2011 season.

That year’s quota was also increased to include the unused licenses from the 2010 season.

Three licenses are available to beneficiaries in each of the communities of Nain and Hopedale.

Two licenses are available in each of the other Nunatsiavut communities.

Another change this season is the amount of time a hunter can hold a license.

Each beneficiary can hold the license for seven hunting days.

The amount of time was 72 hours, or three days, during the 2011 season.

The 2012 polar bear season opens on February 1.

It closes by June 30 or earlier if the quota has been filled.
