NL Power Releases Refund Information

Approximately $136 million must be refunded to customers who held and made payments on active accounts from Newfoundland Power during a six-year period.

On Sept. 7, the company’s website provided some answers on the refund program.

Customers of NL Power and Island interconnected customers of NL Hydro who were billed and subsequently paid for electricity between Jan. 1, 2007 and Aug. 31, 2013 are eligible for the refund.

NL Power’s website states its records show approximately 267,000 customers, 186,000 who are active and 81,000 that are not.

The focus will be on refunding current/active customers first, and then shift to former/inactive customers.

Customers who are eligible for the refund, which depends on energy used during the time period, will see, on average, approximately $5.57 refunded for each electricity bill paid during that period.

Residential customers without electric heat uses, on average, will see approximately $3.04 for each electricity bill paid during the refund period.

NL Power does not have an exact date for when customers will start seeing the refunds, and advises checking the webpage, which will be updated as information becomes available.

Customers with existing balances will have the refund applied to the balance and the remainder will be paid by cheque.

Customers with more than one account will receive one refund cheque.
