NG Speaker Sean Lyall Reprimanded

The speaker for the Nunatsiavut Assembly in Labrador has been reprimanded for making inappropriate remarks toward a constituent.

A discipline committee said Sean Lyall’s conduct at a private gathering amounted to misconduct.

This is according to a Nunatsiavut Government news release issued yesterday.

A hearing was held Aug. 18 in Nain.

The committee decided Lyall treated the constituent with a lack of courtesy and respect, and brought discredit to his office.

Lyall, who represents Nain in the Nunatsiavut Assembly, was reportedly intoxicated when he made the remarks.

The committee has ordered him to write a formal apology to the complainant.

Lyall is also required to file the letter with the clerk for the Nunatsiavut Assembly.

The Speaker is the elected official who normally handles complaints concerning members of the Nunatsiavut Assembly.

Because the Speaker was the subject of this complaint, the Deputy Speaker, Patricia Ford, dealt with the matter and referred it to the ad-hoc committee.
