NG President Sarah Leo Not Seeking Re-election

NG President Sarah Leo has decided not to take another run at the Presidency of the Nunatsiavut Government.

In an interview Tuesday evening, President Leo revealed that she will not seek re-election this May, citing personal reasons.

President Leo couldn’t say what’s next on the horizon for her at this time.

She was elected President of the Nunatsiavut government on June 11, 2012.

She was speaking after taking part in the Nunatsiavut Executive Committee Open House in Nain last Tuesday evening.

The event ran from approximately 7 to 9 pm.

A wide variety of topics were covered, including fish and wildlife enforcement, a senior’s home on the North coast, and housing issues.

One particularly emotional topic was a recent increase in children being taken away from their parents by Child Youth and Family Services.

During the interview afterward, President Leo expressed disappointment with the turnout for the event.

She cited housing, childcare, and wildlife management as the main issues that stood out for her during the evening.

President Leo also expressed some strong opinions on childcare and alcoholism in Nunatsiavut communities.

She added she is disappointed with the decision to hold the Presidential Inuktitut debate entirely in Inuktitut.
