Man with a Gun Puts Nain on High Alert

The community of Nain was on high alert Monday night when a man fired a firearm several times.

Sergeant Cal Barter is with the RCMP Detachment in Nain.

He says a 41-year-old man barricaded himself inside of a residence with a firearm.

He was threatening to kill himself.

Nain RCMP arrived on the scene at around 9:30 p.m. Monday evening.

Barter says they evacuated several surrounding homes after hearing two gunshots.

The RCMP evacuated the bar of the nearby Atsanik Lodge as well.

The man surrendered to RCMP with the assistance of family members who spoke with him on the telephone.

Barter says he surrendered unarmed during the early hours of Tuesday.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor.

The man is facing several charges including dangerous use of a firearm, mischief and possession of a firearm while prohibited.

He is scheduled to appear before provincial court in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Tuesday.

They don’t get much praise for what they do, but a nice job well done by the RCMP. They kept residents safe, arrested the man without harm to him or themselves and made the community a little more safer. Great job!
