Residents in Newfoundland and Labrador will be introduced to a 10-digit dialing system for all local calls.
According to a news release this morning the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) says that the 10 digit dialing system will be introduced next summer.
Starting on August 17, 2018, residents will have to start dialing their area code and the seven digit number they are dialing.
And according to CRTC, a new area code will also be introduced starting in November of 2018.
The reason being is because the area code 709 is reaching its capacity, and a new area code 879 will be introduced.
CRTC is recommending that all communication equipment be reprogrammed now for the 10 digit dialing system and that telecommunication companies are already able to support the 10 digit dialed calls.
