Investment For Affordable Housing In Happy Valley-Goose Bay

A provincial government press release stated a combined federal-provincial investment of $27.9 million for affordable Housing.

This was announced in Nov. 2014 through an extension to Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 2014-19.

On July 31, the province announced conditional approval to a total of 60 private and non-profit sector groups to develop a total of 481 new affordable housing projects throughout the province.

Two companies in HVGB have been provided conditional approval to develop affordable housing projects in HVGB.

Both Dorman Roberts Ltd. and Labrador Coatings Ltd were each awarded $550,000 to construct 10 affordable housing units each.

In the non-profit supportive affordable housing projects, Libra House will receive $600,000 in federal/provincial funds.

Clyde Jackman, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, stated priority will be given to those developing affordable rental housing for seniors, persons with disabilities, persons with complex needs, and people who require supports to live independently in the community.

Capt. Brent Haas of the HVGB Salvation Army says this announcement is certainly a response to some major concerns of homelessness and housing issues in the Upper Lake Melville area.

The Salvation Army as well as many other organizations are working on the Shelter piece as presently, there is nothing available for the short-term for those who find themselves in need while waiting for long-term accommodations.
