Hopedale Waiting for Commitment from Provincial Government on PCB Cleanup (Audio)

The Hopedale Inuit Community Government is still waiting for a commitment from the provincial government to clean up the recently-discovered PCB’s in the community’s harbour.

Hopedale AngajukKak Wayne Piercy says they still haven’t received any word from the province.

It was recently revealed that traces of PCBs were found in the harbour and several species of the fish that live in it.

Residents of the community have been advised not to consume any of the shellfish or bottom-feeding fish found in the harbour.

The provincial government is currently in the process of carrying out a remediation program to clean up PCBs in other areas of the community.

The current remediation plan does not include the community’s harbour.
