Happy Valley-Goose Bay Forest Fire Contained

A forest fire that burned in the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area over the weekend has been contained.

Mayor Leo Abass says the blaze started shortly after lunch on Friday.

The fire began on the north side of Happy Valley-Goose Bay’s airport.

Abass says that the blaze was moving towards the Canadian side and the main dock.

High temperatures and winds helped fuel the blaze.

Some residents were evacuated from their homes on Friday afternoon.

They were allowed to return later that evening.

Abass says they received assistance from the provincial Department of Natural Resources and the Department of National Defense.

Two water bombers from outside also assisted in dealing with the blaze.

The fire spread across approximately 700 hectares of land.

The mayor says crews continue to monitor the area for hotspots.

The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
