Gymnastic Camps Offered to Nunatsiavut Youth

The 2012 Summer Olympics have inspired youth from across the globe to begin sharpening their athletic abilities in hopes of one day representing their country.

A series of gymnastics camps may be the starting point for some future gymnasts from this region.

The camps are being offered to Labrador communities by the Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Health and Social Development.

One of the week-long camps is currently being held in Nain.

Similar camps have already taken place in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, North West River, Rigolet and Makkovik.

Young people in Hopedale will have the chance to learn gymnastics during one of the camps next week.

The week after that will see the camp offered in Postville.

Julie Blanchette, who has been a gymnastics coach for 12 years, is teaching the young people the sport.

A former National Aboriginal Role Model, Gavin Evans of Makkovik, is also on hand to help deliver the camps.

The goal of the camps is to promote health-related careers through physical activity.
