Contract for TRHA to Build New Homes Being Negotiated

The Nunatsiavut Government and the Torngat Regional Housing Association are finalizing a contract for the construction of homes in Nunatsiavut communities this season.

Margie Fox is the Chair of TRHA’s board.

She says they met with Nunatsiavut Government officials last week to discuss the contract.

This is the first year an agreement will be signed between the two parties.

She says the contract contains over $2.1 million for the construction of new homes.

Fox says the Nunatsiavut Government’s Executive Council is reviewing the contract this week.

The selection of recipients for new homes and repairs hasn’t been carried out yet.

Fox says they need to establish local housing committees in most Nunatsiavut communities before the selections take place.

TRHA is currently in the process of advertising for the committees.

Hopefully this is great news for Nain. I’m not dissing on the other communities, but the community of Nain is in crying need for housing. Sure we all heard this for years, but it is what it is and the other communities need to know this.

Other towns might only need to annually build 1-2 houses maximum, and usually those towns drastically search for someone to apply, just so that people are employed. What the other towns have to see, is that here in Nain, there are like 30-40 people on the waiting list who NEED a new home. That’s not including the houses that are in dire need for renovations.

Now you do the math, and see what is more efficient. Here is a solution. Put a housing freeze for the communities of Rigolet, Makkovik and Postville for about 5 years. In 5 years, that will be 20 or so more houses for Nain. By those years are up, the communities of Rigolet, Makkovik and Postville will have a good few people in need. Note the word “need”. This will also give you all a small glympse of what Nain has to endure year after year after year.

Your theory sounds good..but keep in mind what happens to the workers of the three communities mentioned if TRHA was to go the freeze route..will these people be hired in the Community of Nain?.Obviously these carpenters are experienced and depend on that much needed employment even if it is just Seasonal.A big blow to their reputations…a huge change to way of life working from in their own community for yrs. and possibility of no work. in turn no hours accumulated for Winter Unemployment. and the list can go… just a concern.

Well (labradornews) TRHA in the past has sent TRHA carpenters, labourers etc. to Nain or elsewhere to help with work. So during that 5 year freeze, those workers who would normally have employment within their own community, could be deployed to Nain & Hopedale. Now you speak of “reputations”…what about the “reputations” the two largest Nunatsiavut communities have (Nain & Hopedale) whom are both in actual need of housing? None more-so than Nain. I know, I know…everyone get annoyed with the whole “Nain needs this, Nain gets that etc.”, but when your community has a 30+ wait list for housing and maybe an equally high for renovations, then that slogan or excuse is a reality.

Each year, the towns of Rigolet, Makkovik & Postville get what? 1 maybe 2 houses to build, and those towns ask around and even at times, desperately ask people to apply, just so their town receives employment rather than need. But don’t get me wrong, I’m not intending to put down the other towns, rather pointing out the obvious.
