Coastal Ice Conditions Update

It’s the time of the year when everyone should be cautious while traveling by snowmobile especially on the ice.

Even though the harbors in most north coast communities did freeze over, very warm temperatures hampered the ice conditions on the north coast.

We called each of the coastal communities to find out more about their ice conditions.

Richard Rich of Rigolet says the ice conditions are getting bad, and people can’t cross the Double Mer harbor.

Rich says people are going in speed boats to hunt or fish.

Ross Flowers of Hopedale says the Hopedale area is still pretty good, but there are rattles and tide places that are bad,.

The outside is bad and people are still traveling on the ice up the bay to fish.

We also spoke with Roy Martin from Makkovik.

He says the snow is getting soft in some places on the harbor.

People need to be extra cautious on the ice especially during traveling.

We also spoke to Ronald Webb of Nain.

Webb says the ice is still good to travel on, with some water showing due to snow melting.

But people are still traveling on the ice to fish and hunt.

We have not yet spoken with Postville but will do so during the week.
