Coastal Community DHSD Activities (Hopedale & Nain)

The Department of Health and Social Development offices are quite busy this month with upcoming events in their communities. We contacted a few of the DHSD’s along the coast, to find out what’s happening in their community.

The Hopedale DHSD will be holding some community events this month.

Sybilla Hunter is the Community Health worker with DHSD.

She says they are preparing for the upcoming Halloween parties for youth, adults and elders.

They are currently airing radio spots about family violence.

She says they hold weekly family programs each Thursday from 4:30-6:30 pm. They also hold weekly card games at the katingavik building every Wednesday at 6 pm.

Hunter says they are planning for the last week for the upcoming diabetes for ages 18 -49 and 50 plus.

Parents who have children ages of 0-7 in the oral health initiative are asked to give verbal consent to Sybilla and you must complete the applications forms.

We also spoke with Jane Merkuratsuk the Community Health Worker for Nain.

She says there will be a Family Pumpkin carving this evening at 6 pm at the DHSD. Seats are filled; they only had 10 seats for the family pumpkin carving.

They are also planning a Halloween Best-Decorated window contest.

The judges will judge the best decorated window on Oct 30th at 6 pm.

Prizes will be for 1st spookiest, 2nd most creative, 3rd most fun. They will stop accepting names on Oct 30th at 4 pm, starting today.

We also contacted the Happy Valley Goose-Bay and Postville DHSD’s.
