Caribou Decline Possibly increases Interest in Moose Licenses

There is a lot of interest in moose licenses this year.

Interest came from every community in Nunatsiavut including Upper Lake Melville.

Jim Goudie, the Wildlife Manager for the Nunatsiavut government, says that twenty-five licenses in total have been distributed.

The community government in Postville returned two of their moose licenses.

They did that because they do not have the freezer space.

As a result, two moose licenses have been returned for the harvester draw.

Every community government has a moose license, with the exception of Postville.

Instead of 4 harvester moose licenses, Postville now has six harvester moose licenses.

Goudie says that on average there are about 15 people in each community interested in the moose draw.

He hopes that it’s a successful year for moose hunting.

According to Goudie, a hunter in the community of Rigolet has already killed one moose.
