Sealed bids are being accepted from beneficiaries interested in harvesting one moose under the Nunatsiavut Government for the 2017-2018 management plan.

Your bids must include the slaughter, butchering, distribution and disposal of the meat to the community as determined by the Makkovik Inuit Community Government (MICG).

In addition, the antlers, if any, are to remain with the MICG.

All tools, fuel, ammunitions, packaging and supplies associated with the hunt are to be covered under the bid.

Please note that the moose must be harvested by March 31, 2018.

You can submit your sealed bids and bid amount inside the envelope to the council office by Friday February 16, 2018 at 4:00 pm.

Academy Canada’s Open House in Nain has been postponed.

The event was scheduled for today, but is now postponed until 10 am tomorrow, Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at the Atsanik Lodge.

The Open House event is to discuss its Adult Basic Education program.

It is open to all individuals who are interested in obtaining a high school diploma.

The Department of Health and Social Development will be hosting a pancake breakfast tomorrow- February 13, 2018- for the community of Nain.

It will start at 7:30 am, and will run until 9:30 am.

The meal consists of pancakes, bacon, eggs, and fruit.

Tea, coffee and milk are also offered as well.

The Northern Lights show was held in Ottawa, Ontario from January 31 to February 3, 2018.

Peggy Andersen is the Executive Director for Torngat Arts and Crafts Inc.

She says herself, Germaine Andersen from Makkovik, and Heather Angnatok from Nain were there to display the crafts that Nunatsiavut crafters make.

Andersen says she mainly showed Labradorite pieces, carvings, brass carved earrings, and grass earrings.

In Nain, the community freezer is empty at the moment.

Hopedale has moose meat.

Rigolet’s freezer has char, partridges, red berries, moose meat and sausages.

OK Radio attempted to contact the Postville community freezer, but no one was available.

Makkovik’s Pantry and Wood box committee is out of funding right now, but if someone really needs something, they can try to help them.

The longest and toughest snowmobile race is once again approaching.

The Cain’s Quest Snowmobile Endurance Race is scheduled for Friday, March 2, 2018 in Labrador.

Glen Emberly is the Chairperson for the race.

He says there are 41 teams registered- the most they’ve ever had.

Emberly adds about 50 percent of the snowmobile racers are rookies.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced that Great Value popping corn, sold at Walmart stores across Canada, has been recalled because of the presence of insects in its product.

This irrelevant material advisory took effect on February 6, 2018 following consumer complaints to both Walmart and the agency, said spokesperson Anna Matos.

The type of insect in the unpopped kernels was not determined during the investigation, she said.

Matos says, however, popping corn, like other grain or agricultural product, is susceptible to insects, particularly during storage of the grain.

Matos also says no related illnesses have been reported.

The recall is considered a “class III,” which means the use of, or exposure to, the “disturbing product is not likely to cause any harm,” she said.

CFIA does not have any information about the volume sold.

The agency does not have a photograph of the recalled product either.

The Great Value recall affects the one-kilogram size with the UPC 6 81131 76007 2, the agency said.

It includes all best before dates on or before December 28, 2017, it said.

This is the second national recall of a popcorn product because of insects in as many months.

The recall of Selection brand popping corn was issued on December 27, 2017.

It includes all best before dates on or before December 28, 2017.

Walmart Canada Corporation issued the recall.

The Selection brand recall affects the one-kilogram size with the UPC 0 59749 88103 6 and best before dates of July 26 to September 29, 2017, as well as the two-kilogram size with the UPC 59749 88102 and best before dates of July 25 to September 29, 2017.

Metro Brands is the recalling firm.

The Nunatsiavut Government Status of Women office will be honoring a Labrador Inuit Woman with a 2017 Inuit Woman of the Year award.

There is no set criteria for this award.

It is open for anyone to nominate a Labrador Inuit Woman who they feel deserves to be recognized as Inuit Women of the Year 2017.
