The Polar Bear Safety Training program went really well in Hopedale last week.
Derrick Pottle was the instructor for this program.
He says three participants took part in the training.
Pottle adds he will be going down south to do the polar bear training as well.

Winter Sports Meet 2018 was held in Rigolet from February 22-24, 2018.
The events for the sports meet were Badminton, Ball Hockey, Cross Country Skiing, Outdoor Soccer, the Labrathon, and Native Games.
Steve Brazil is the Coach for Northern Lights Academy in Rigolet. According to Brazil, these are the Winter Sports Meet results:
In Badminton, Rigolet came first, second went to Hopedale, and Makkovik placed third.
First place in Ball Hockey went to Makkovik, Nain was second, and finishing third was Postville.
In Cross Country Skiing for team awards for Females, first place went to Rigolet, second to Hopedale, and Nain took third place.
For Male Cross Country, first place went to Nain, Makkovik placed second, and Hopedale finished third.
In Outdoor Soccer, first place went to Hopedale, Rigolet was second, and Nain was third.
In Labrathon for the team awards, first place went to Rigolet, second to Makkovik, and Nain placed third.
Winners of the Natives games for Females were Hopedale, second went to Rigolet, and Nain captured third place.
In the Males competition, Makkovik finished first, second place was taken by Nain, and finishing third was Postville.
For Team and Individual meet awards, the Female Sportsmanship award went to Nain’s Starr Webb, and the Male Sportsmanship award was given to Hopedale’s William Tuglavina.
The Mister Obed sportsmanship award went to Natuashish.
In overall points, Rigolet came first, Hopedale was second, and Makkovik captured third.
Important information has been released regarding the MMIWG National Inquiry hearings to take place in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL.
They’re hoping to have everyone registered by the end of the day today.

Kaila De Boer is Director of Mental Wellness and Healing for the Nunatsiavut Government.
She says that Commissioner Qajaq Robinson will be in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador for the community hearings.
The dates are now confirmed for March 7th & 8th, 2018.
Anyone from the public can attend the hearings to observe them in the public hearing rooms.

This year’s Labrador Inuit Youth Symposium aims to strengthen, empower, and inspire delegates to express their concerns on a wide range of topics.
The annual event, taking place in Makkovik, NL March 1 to 5, will gather five youth from each of the five Labrador Inuit communities and Upper Lake Melville, along with one from the Canadian Constituency.
The delegates will take part in a variety of activities, including round-table discussions, a day on the land, and a concert and engagement session with 2017 Canadian Folk Music’s Aboriginal Songwriters of the Year, Twin Flames.
There will be presentations on tuberculosis and its impact on Inuit youth in the region, as well as on Nunatsiavut’s Tobacco Control Strategy.
Both presentations will highlight youth champions, and how they have overcome challenges on their way to leading healthier lifestyles.
Youth talent will also be on display, with the opening ceremony showcasing youth drummers and throat singers.
Delegates will be asked to discuss issues and challenges facing youth in their respective communities, and to offer solutions through brainstorming sessions.
All feedback will be used to develop a Nunatsiavut Youth Strategy.
On Wednesday February 21, 2018, the Department of Health and Social Development staff went wooding outside of Nain.
Rutie Lampe is the Mental Health worker for DHSD.
She says six men and herself went to the Burnt Woods to go wooding.
Lampe says they got three big Kamutik loads of wood that day.
She says it was a beautiful day, and everyone was happy and helped out each other.
Lampe says they gathered wood for Elders and families in need.
She adds they will go wooding every Wednesday to gather wood.
The Twin Flames will be performing on their Nunatsiavut, Labrador tour soon.
Chelsea June and Jaaji say that they will be going to Makkovik on the 3rd of March for their first performance of the tour.
On March the 5th, they’ll be going to Nain again to perform for the second time.
They previously performed in Nain as part of the National Inuit Youth Summit last summer.
March 6th, they’ll be heading to Hopedale.
And they’ll be on their way to Postville on March 7th.
For their last performance on the tour, they’ll be heading down to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL.

The Jens Haven Memorial School (JHMS) Huskies of Nain travelled to Avondale, NL for the Table Tennis Provincials Tournament yesterday.
The tourney starts at 9 am tomorrow morning, with the Huskies first game.
Their first game is against Fatima Academy (FA) from Saint Bride’s, NL.
Opening ceremonies will start at 10:45 am, and continue throughout the day.
The semis will start at 1:30, and are followed by the finals.
OK Radio would like to wish the JHMS huskies good luck in the Provincials.
The winter sports meet is taking place in Rigolet this week.
There are six North Coast community schools participating.

He says that the winter sports meet starts today, and will conclude on Saturday.
They are still waiting for all teams to fly in, but they have started with badminton with the teams that are there.
Brazil says that they will continue with badminton until 6 pm, when the opening ceremonies will be held.
The opening ceremonies will be followed by Ball Hockey.
He added that he welcomes all the teams, and good luck to everyone in the events.

Labrador’s Moravian Church Choir script,”Makkipok” which is sung on Easter Sunday, will be performed in St. John’s next weekend.
This will be a concert.
The Lady Cove Women’s Choir, in partnership with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, (NSO) and Newman Sound Men’s Choir, will give the audience a chance to experience this unique part of Labrador Inuit concert.
To make this event accessible to the people of Labrador as well as communities around the globe, Memorial University’s Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning will live stream the concert.
The concert takes place on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 8 pm at The Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
