Jens Haven Memorial School will host their Annual Grade 8 Heritage Fair this Friday, March 2, 2018 from 1 to 3 pm in the 4 to 12 gymnasium.

The public is invited to attend the fair to see the students’ projects with this year’s theme “Lessons from Our Past, Shaping Our Future”.

The Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD) in Nain is still looking for people to join the HOPE Walk Committee.

Elsie Russell is a Mental Health and Addictions Worker with the DHSD in Nain.

She says a meeting will take place tomorrow at the Nunatsiavut Government Boardroom.

The plan is for the walk to be sometime after Easter, maybe around April 11, 2018.

Russell is hoping everyone will come together to do this healing journey.

According to an ITK news release, it is encouraging and constructive that this year’s budget utilizes an Inuit Nunangat fiscal policy based on direct federal allocations to Inuit.

The following Inuit-specific investments proposed in Budget 2018 are notable:

$400 million over 10 years to support an Inuit-led housing plan in the Inuit regions of Nunavik, Nunatsiavut and Inuvialuit. This is in addition to the $240 million over 10 years announced in Budget 2017 to support housing in Nunavut, where additional funding was provided for Inuit housing.

$27.5 million over five years to eliminate tuberculosis in Inuit Nunangat, including through support of ITK’s Inuit-specific approach to tuberculosis elimination.

$82 million over 10 years, with $6 million per year ongoing, for the co-creation of a permanent Inuit Health Survey.

Funding will build capacity in Inuit communities to develop and collect survey information and support Inuit self-determination in setting the research agenda in their regions
and communities.

In addition, this year’s budget proposes to invest $161.2 million over five years in the Inuit stream of the Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program, which supports employment services, skills development, and job training.

According to the release, ITK is looking forward to beginning work on the next step of the Inuit Health Survey. Further, ITK recognises that the 2018 budget represents a step in the right direction.

Nunatsiavut Government (NG) President Johannes Lampe has announced that, effective immediately, Lands and Natural Resources Minister Darryl Shiwak has assumed the role of Acting Minister of Health and Social Development.

Mr. Shiwak replaces Greg Flowers, who has been granted a leave of absence to deal with personal matters.

Mr. Flowers will continue to serve as the Ordinary Member for Hopedale, NL in the Nunatsiavut Assembly.

Five Youth between the ages of 15 to 30 from each of the communities of Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik, Rigolet, Goose Bay and North West River are being given the opportunity to attend this year’s Labrador Inuit Youth Symposium.

The symposium takes place in Makkovik, NL, starting on March 1, and ending on March 5, 2018.

The highlight for this year’s youth symposium is the Twin Flames.

The exciting activities will include youth guest speakers, youth talent shows, and regional strategy and engagement sessions, with much more planned by the Nunatsiavut Inuit youth.

The deadline to apply was on February 18, 2018.

The 2nd Annual Grace Jararuse Flowers Memorial Ice Hockey Fun Tournament is scheduled to begin on March 1st, 2018.

We spoke to Edward Flowers, and he says that the opening ceremonies will start at 6 pm.

The opening ceremonies will begin with the defending champions Team Harris versus Team Bantam and Midgets.

There are four teams registered for the Minor Hockey division, which includes Team Gracie, Lucky Pucks, Bop’s Team and Hockey Moms.

The Adults division consists of four teams, which include Nain RCMP, Old Nanuks, Team Harris, and Team Bantam and Midgets.

There will also be awards handed out, including most valuable player, top scorer, most sports-minded player, top goaltender, top goaltender overall, top defensemen, and a new award called the Grace Jararuse award.

The Men’s Mitt-Making program in Nain has been changed to another date.

Rutie Lampe is the Mental Health worker for the Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD).

She says the men’s mitt-making program was supposed to be on March 5, but it’s now changed to March 12th of this year.

Lampe says it is changed because the Twin Flames will be in Nain on the original day of the program.

The day for the Cain’s Quest Endurance snowmobile race is coming closer and closer.

Racers are geared up to leave the start line in Labrador City at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018.

There are 41 teams in total, with racers coming from Ontario, Quebec, the Island, Central, Southern and Northern Labrador, and even Finland.

Teams from Nain, Natuashish, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, North West River and Sheshatshiu are entered in the race.

There are 19 check points.

Racers will travel from Labrador City to Churchill Falls, north to Nain, and to the south coast to Mary’s Harbour and LÀnse au Clair, before heading back to the finish line in Lab West.

A closing banquet is scheduled for March 10.

Labrador’s Moravian Church Choir script, “Makkipok” which is sung on Easter Sunday, will be performed in St. John’s this weekend.

The Lady Cove Women’s Choir, in partnership with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, (NSO) and Newman Sound Men’s Choir, will give the audience a chance to experience this unique part of a Labrador Inuit concert.

Kellie Walsh is the Director of Lady Cove Women’s Choir.

To make this event accessible to the people of Labrador, as well as communities around the globe, Memorial University’s Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning will live stream the concert.

The concert takes place on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 8 pm at The Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
