Labrador RCMP are continuing their search for a missing snowmobiler from Natuashish, NL.

RCMP report four men from Natuashish left Hopedale, NL on March 18, 2018 around suppertime to travel to Natuashish, a ride of about 80 kilometres.

They were reported overdue around 1:30 a.m., and a search began.

Ground Search and Rescue from Hopedale and Natuashish were mobilized.

However, blizzard-like conditions hampered the search.

Two of the four men were located yesterday at 4:30 pm, and both men were fine.

Another man was found at 11:30 pm last night, and will require medical attention.

Search efforts for the remaining man are continuing today.

Conditions in the area are hazardous due to high winds creating blowing snow and whiteout conditions.

Air support from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL is currently on weather hold, and air support is en route from Gander to Goose Bay.

OK Radio also contacted Michael Piwas, one of the volunteer firefighters in Natuashish.

Piwas says that he was unable to give out information, as he was awaiting more calls from the Ground Search and Rescue team and the RCMP.

According to Piwas, search organizers are trying to round up more people to assist in the ground search and rescue operation.

Spring began a day early this year in the Northern Hemisphere.

Today is the first day of spring.

This season brings increasing daylight and warming temperatures.

On this first day of spring, day and night are both approximately 12 hours long.

Those daylight and night hours will stay the same for the next few days.

OKâlaKatiget Society contacted the community freezer in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL to see what they offer in their town.

They have partridges, rabbit, moose meat, smelts, cod fillets, peas and corn.

They also have red and blue berries, strawberries and raspberries to offer to their community.

We tried to contact Postville community freezer as well, but no one was available.

Nain hosted the 38th Annual Heritage Dog Team Race this past Saturday, March 17, 2018.

Isabella Pain was one of the volunteers for the event.

Pain says it took the racers almost over three hours for some racers to make it back, and almost four hours for another racer.

The First place prize of $2018 went to Perry Voisey from Makkovik.

The Second place prize of $1500 was won by Buddy Morgan-Winters, also from Makkovik.

And the Third place prize of $1000 was taken home by Andreas Jararuse from Hopedale.

Due to the bad weather, flights in and out of the north coast have been cancelled.

The last flight that made it in to Nain came in this past Sunday, March 18, 2018.

The Embroidery and Children’s Drawings project was supposed to be going on today from 10 am to 2 pm at the Nunatsiavut Government Boardroom.

The Climate Change Adaptation Workshop was also supposed to start today.

OK Radio spoke with Kristeen McTavish, one of the coordinators for the workshop.

McTavish says that the workshop is now postponed to sometime in May.

The weather has also postponed the NGC Roadshow for the communities of Makkovik and Rigolet.

Sarah Leo is the Vice- President of Corporate Development with NGC.

She said that they’ll wait for the updates this afternoon to make a decision for the other communities.

Election for Ordinary members is set for Tuesday, May 1, 2018.

This will be the fourth general election for ordinary election to the Nunatsiavut Assembly.

Election Day is Tuesday, May 1st, 2018 as per section 4.5.2 of the Labrador Constitution and sections 26 and 27 of the Nunatsiavut Election Act.

Nominations for candidates close at 2 pm AST on Tuesday, March 27, 2018.

The AngajukKâk for the Hopedale Inuit Community Government (HICG) has a lot planned for their town this year.

We spoke with Marjorie Flowers, AngajukKâk for Hopedale.

Flowers plans to get the roads upgraded, and they will also be doing sewer repairs, and a lot more is planned as well.

They are now in phase two of the water supply study.

Flowers expects these projects to start after they receive funding from the Capital Works Projects.

She hopes to get the tenders out earlier this year, as the HICG was a little late getting the tenders out last year.

The 25th Makkovik Jamboree went really well over the weekend.

Linda Pottle is the Team Leader for the Makkovik Department of Health and Social Development.

She says there were12 to14 entertainers this year.

Pottle adds the event went on for about 5 hours.

Youth from Nain travelled to the NL games here in Deer Lake last week.

Edward Flowers volunteered to coach the team, and was one of the chaperones.

He says that it was an exciting few days of table tennis competition for our kids from Nain.

They played awesome, and were the talk of the tournament.

They are all very proud of their results: two Gold medals in Singles, and Silver in Boys Team competition.

Madison Dicker won gold in the girl’s competition, and Tyson Dicker took home the gold in the boy’s competition.

Samira Kohlmeister placed 4th, Stephen Dennisten placed 5th, Caleb Dyson placed 5th, and Billy Fox placed 8th.

They are anxious to come home today, weather permitting of course.

Flowers added that it would be nice to see some people come down to the airstrip and congratulate our table tennis team.

He thinks the kids deserve a big crowd, and congratulate them on a job well done.

The George Lane Memorial Dart Tournament in Hopedale this year took place this past weekend.

OK Radio spoke with Jill Nitsman, one of the coordinators for the event.

Nitsman says that there were a total of 13 teams.

Here are the results:

First place prize of $1000 went to Jill Nitsman, James Freida, Sybilla Torarak, and Darryl, one of the RCMP members in Hopedale.

Second place prize of $600 went to Billy and Maggie Jararuse, and Stonia and Simeon Nochasak.

And capturing third place was the team of Jim Tuttauk, Clayton Mitchell, Angel Chaulk, and Amy Tuglavina, who took home $400.

Nitsman adds that the committee still has tickets for sale on an airline ticket with Air Borealis.

And hopes that next year the prizes will be bigger.
