The Department of Health and Social Development in Nain was going to have a Health Fair on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, but that has now been changed to today’s date of March 23, 2018.

The fair is taking place at the Jeremias Sillitt Centre from 12 noon to 4 pm.

A meal consisting of soup and chili was provided from 12 pm to 1:30 pm, and healthy snacks will be provided throughout the afternoon.

Everyone who attends will have a chance to win one of three food boxes, and a variety of other great prizes.

You do not have to be present to win.

There will also be displays on a variety of different health topics.

The Torngat Wildlife and Plants Co-Management Board and the Nunatsiavut Government are offering a bear guard, bear safety, and best handling practices training session in Nain starting today March 23 until March 25, 2018.

The training started today at 1 pm in the upstairs of the Atsanik Lodge.

There is no fee for this course.

The Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD) is working with the Labrador- Grenfell Regional Health Authority on Tuberculosis (TB) to immediately implement a series of public health measures in Nain, NL.

The NL Department of Health and Community Services has just confirmed that the probable cause of death of a 14 year old boy from Nain last Sunday, March 18 was tuberculosis.

Johannes Lampe, President of the Nunatsiavut Government (NG), was in our studio today.

We also had Sylvia Doody, the Director of Health Services for DHSD, and Tina Buckle, the Community Health Coordinator for NG on the phone.

Labrador Grenfell Health says contact tracing is underway and as a precautionary measure, TB treatments may be prescribed to those at risk.

Public health would like to inform parents of children in grades 4-12 at Jens Haven Memorial
School that TB testing is planned to be offered in the school on Monday, March 26.

Before we can offer this test to your child a parent or guardian must sign the consent form all
children under the age of 16 years old.

Public health staff will be visiting parents/guardians on Friday March 23 to get these consents signed.

Getting the consents signed by parents/guardians in a timely manner is important.

Public health cannot do a TB test on your child(ren) until the consent is signed.

Labrador-Grenfell Health is informing the public that TB screening appointments are available at the Nain Clinic.

The NL Department of Health and Community Services says that the cause of a recent death in Nain, NL was tuberculosis.

According to a Health and Community Services press release, contract tracing is now underway in Nain to identify individuals who have had close contact with the deceased person.

According to a Nunatsiavut Government press release, President Johannes Lampe says all steps are being taken to deal with issues related to the death of the 14 year old boy.

“This is a tragic situation, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time,” says President Lampe.

In addition to contract tracing, as a precautionary measure, treatments may be prescribed to those deemed at risk.

“It is important for residents to understand that there is no imminent risk to the community, as TB is spread through close contact with infected individuals,” adds President Lampe. “If residents are concerned that they or their loved ones may have signs of tuberculosis, they should immediately report to the Nain clinic. TB can be prevented and treated.”

Symptoms may include:

• A cough lasting at least two weeks.
• Coughing up phlegm or blood.
• Feeling weak or very tired.
• Loss of appetite.
• Weight loss
• Fever
• Night Sweats; and
• Chest Pain

Residents of Nain will be provided with updates as they become available.

Lands and Natural Resources Minister Darryl Shiwak says he’s been advised of several reports of caribou being harvested from the endangered Mealy Mountains herd on Labrador Inuit Lands.

“We have received a number of reports that caribou are being taken by multiple hunters travelling in to the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Area, and that there doesn’t appear to be any enforcement efforts being carried out to stop the illegal activity,” notes Minister Shiwak.

The Mealy Mountains sub-population of boreal woodland caribou is listed as an endangered species under federal and provincial species-at-risk legislation.

“The provincial and federal governments are responsible to monitor and enforce measures under their respective legislation,” says Minister Shiwak. “This is unacceptable, and we would expect action will be taken to ensure the Mealy Mountains caribou are protected.”
