Nunatsiavut Executive Council Open House Part 1 (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Executive Council had their Open House last evening at the Nunatsiavut Government building boardroom.

President Johannes Lampe started off by welcoming everyone.

Then, each minister reported on their departments.

Some residents of Nain were in attendance as well.

Newfoundland Power Applies for Increase in Power Rates

Newfoundland Power is looking for a 1.2 per cent increase in electricity rates, effective March 1 of next year.

The utility has made a general rate application before the Public Utility Board.

The President and Chief Executive Officer of Newfoundland Power, Peter Alteen, says they understand that any rate increase matters to their customers, and they’re working hard to minimize rate increases by managing costs.

Among the costs affecting the rate increases are continued maintenance and energy supply costs.

Meanwhile, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has applied for an increase of 2.8 per cent for July 1, and another 9.4 per cent in January as part of the General Rate Application (GRA).

Hydro is also asking for a 4.7 per cent increase as part of the annual Rate Stabilization Plan (RSP).

OK Society Looking for Delegates for AGM

The OKâlaKatiget Society will be holding their Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Nain the weekend of June 22-24, 2018.

If you are interested in OK Society Language Programming in Radio and or Television, or feel you can contribute to any future programs or administration of the same, please call our office to have your name considered as a delegate.

There will be one delegate chosen from each North Coast Community and the Upper Lake Melville region.

No IlinniaKatigennik Show today

The IlinniaKatigennik (Learning Together) show has been postponed for today.

The Inuktitut language show will be aired next week on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

OKâlaKatiget Radio would like to apologize to its Inuktitut radio listeners for the inconvenient circumstances.

Also, you’ve probably been hearing the weather forecast being read in both languages during the PiusituKavut and IlinniaKatigennik shows.

The Ok Board has decided to have the forecast read in English also, for the safety precautions of everyone, especially people who are going hunting, fishing or going to their cabins.

So make sure to tune in again next week for the IlinniaKatigennik show.

2018 Summer Hours Start Today

Summer hours are taking effect for most organizations in Nain today.

OKâlaKatiget called the Nunatsiavut Government, and their summer hours will take effect today.

Their hours will be from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development’s summer hours are also in effect today.

Their hours are also from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

OKâlaKatiget Society will start summer hours today as well.

The radio department’s hours are from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.

But the host for the 3 to 4 pm show will still be on the air until 4 pm.

And the Nain Inuit Community Government will start their summer hours on June 11.

Them Days Holds AGM (Audio)

Them Days Inc. recently held their AGM in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL.

Aimee Chaulk is the editor of the magazine.

She says that everyone had a lot of fun looking at some unidentified pictures from their ID Them Days project.

They also talked about what the organization has been doing over the past year.

Chaulk added that they held the board elections, and there are three new board members.

St. John’s Native Friendship Centre Update

The St. John’s Native Friendship Centre (SJNFC) has many programs and events planned for this summer.

Chris Sheppard is the Executive Director for the Centre.

Sheppard says that the centre is getting ready for National Indigenous Day, which is on June 21.

He says there are usually several hundred people in attendance.

The centre will also be having several summer students on board with them throughout the summer as well.

Nunatsiavut Executive Open House Tonight

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Lands Claims Agreement are welcome to attend an Open House to meet with the President and Ministers of the Nunatsiavut Executive Council (NEC).

The Open House will take place in Nain, Nunatsiavut today, June 4, 2018 at 7 pm at the Nunatsiavut Government Administration Building in the Main Boardroom.

Refreshments will be available as well.

Nain RCMP Lay Charges in Bootlegging Investigation

Nain RCMP has charged three residents for selling and transporting contraband alcoholic liquor within the community of Nain.

Trudy Dicker has been charged with selling contraband alcoholic liquor pursuant to the Newfoundland & Labrador Liquor Control Act.

Brenda Dicker and Martin Eli Ian Merkuratsuk have been charged with transporting contraband alcoholic liquor pursuant to the Newfoundland & Labrador Liquor Control Act.

They will all appear in Provincial Court in September, 2018.

Nain RCMP continues moving forward with the issue of bootlegging, and are anticipating further seizures and arrests.

Humans of Labrador Project Launched (Audio)

A new project called “The Humans of Labrador” has been launched in Goose Bay, NL.

Martha McDonald is the Associate Director of the Labrador Institute.

She says the project goal is to take pictures of people and get a little story of their life to go along with it.

McDonald says there are three organizations involved.

They are the Tamarack Camera Club, the Labrador Institute of Memorial University, and Them Days Inc in Goose Bay.
