Update with Nunatsiavut Marine

Message from Carlene Palliser, who is the Ordinary Member with the Nunatsiavut Government in Rigolet:

I contacted the general manager of Nunatsiavut Marine Incorporated, Gary Latimer, about whether or not the Northern Ranger will start on June 25th and whether or not it will be servicing communities it can access, here is what he said:

Nunatsiavut Marine Incorporated does not decide which communities get serviced and which ones do not. We follow the schedule as per Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Ranger will not or has not previously left Lewisporte until there is a good chance of servicing all the communities.

In the meantime NMI has commenced accepting freight at Goose Bay and Lewisporte for the coast.

The Ranger has occasionally stopped at Black Tickle and Rigolet on its first trip into Goose, but it is up to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to make that call.

Once we get a clearer picture of a departure date, we post it on our FB page, website and we will do a short press release as well.

Innu Nation Pursuing Transmission Line to North Coast in Wake of Vale Underground Announcement

Innu Nation of Labrador announced yesterday that it will pursue in earnest opportunities to connect the north coast of Labrador to the hydro-electric power generated in Labrador.

The announcement comes on the heels of Vale’s move to underground mining at Voisey’s Bay, and separate meetings with Nalcor Energy CEO Stan Marshall and Nunatsiavut Government President Johannes Lampe on June 12, 2018 in St. Johns.

Innu Grand Chief Gregory Rich said “If there was ever a time to pursue the transmission of electricity to the north coast, it is now. With Vale going underground and the federal government supporting the reduction of greenhouse gas emission, this might be the best chance we have to finally get communities on the north coast connected to the grid and away from diesel.”

Innu Nation believes that the opportunity for development of a transmission line to the north coast must be pursed in light of the Vale announcement and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Rising diesel coasts, unreliable power and growing populations are also significant factors that must be considered. Similar projects for connecting diesel-dependent communities are successfully being rolled out in Ontario.

“Both Nalcor energy and Nunatsiavut Government have expressed an interest in further discussion and I will be looking to schedule those meetings during the week of June 25th-28th at Expo Labrador in HVGB.” Said Grand Chef Rich.

Innu Nation will also pursue discussion with Vale to explore potential partnership opportunities.
