OK Radio not on Air

The OKâlaKatiget Society radio would like to inform its audience that the radio department will not air the regular Sunday morning church service, that includes the afternoon show, July 1st in observance of Canada day.

OKâlaKatiget Society will remain closed on Monday, July2nd.

The station will be back to business on July 3rd.

Elders Conference

There will be Elders Conference coming up this Fall.

Beverly Hunter is the Elders Coordinator.

She says she will be travelling to each of the communities to meet with the elders to see what they want at the conference.

Hunter says they don’t have the date set yet when they will meet.

But it will be held in Nain this year.

Coastal Canada Day Events This Weekend

Canada Day is coming up this Sunday July 1, 2018.

In Nain, the events start tomorrow, Saturday, June 30.

To start off Canada Day there will be a Coed Volleyball Tournament at 2pm at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre.

From 1 pm to 8 pm a Texas Hold ‘Em will take place also at the JSCC and registration starts at 12 noon.

On July 1, Canada Day, to start off the day there a community breakfast is a go at 8 am to 9:30 am at the JSCC.

A Canada Day Photo Contest will go on and your photo’s can be emailed to recreationnain@nf.aibn.com, photos must be sent no later than 4 pm July 3.

Photos must symbolize Canada Day.

A Fishing Contest starts at 10:30 am until 3 pm.

Persons wishing to register for this competition must call the NICG office by 4pm today, June 29.

The parade is at 1 pm starting at the airstrip.

There are only 1st place prizes for the best decorated vehicle, stroller, ATV, pet and bike.

After that a free community bbq will go ahead at the ball field.

1:30 pm games of chance for all.

Peddle boat rentals at the old dam for $5/ person for 15 minutes.
Family activities also start at 1:30 at the ball field.

The cardboard boat race starts at 2:30 pm at the playground.

Giant Radio bingo is at 4pm.

Community Dance and Games up at the JSCC from 7 to 9 pm.

Fireworks are at 11:30 pm.

And on July 2, a 120 card game starts at 1pm at the JSCC.

And to end off the events there is a Softball Tournament at 2 pm.

In Hopedale, the day will start off at 9 am with the flag raising and then at 9:30 the parade will start.

Games and events throughout the day.

In Makkovik, they start with a parade starting at 11 am.

Fun filled games and events all day and end off the day with a short fireworks display at 10:30 pm.

In Rigolet, they start off with a flag raising and singing of “O Canada” at 1:15 pm.

They end off their day of events with a bbq and salads sponsored by VALE and the RICG at 5 pm.

OK Radio was unable to get any information from Postville at this time.

JHMS K-6 Awards

The Jens Haven Memorial School kindergarten students to grade 6 graduation and award presentations were held in Nain yesterday morning.

The Grades 4-12 school gym was packed with the students parents, grandparents, family and friends.

This event is always a good get together and to see your happy child moving to another grade.

This also shows the teachers are there throughout the years school term to help students in education.

Let’s all give a moment to thank the teachers for the tremendous help they do and all the students.

TRHA update

Torngat Regional Housing Association has some repairs started that is carried over from last year in some communities.

William Lucy is the Coordinator.

He says but there is none allocated for this summer’s repair program.

Lucy says new homes were allocated for this years construction in each of the towns.

In Nain theres 4 homes to be constructed including Hopedale, 3 in Rigolet, 1 in Makkovik with repairs in Postville.

Torngat Fishery update

Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative is waiting on the ice conditions to be more favourable for the boats to start running.

Keith Watts is the General Manager.

He says the Makkovik plant is working on installing new equipment before it opens to start the crab fishery.

Watts says the Nain fishplant will also be getting ready probably first week of July.

The plant engineers are ready to come once everything is ready.

But right now everyone is still waiting for the ice conditions, which is being monitored daily.

Cap and Gown Celebrations along the North Coast

The end of the school year is finally almost here.

In Rigolet, Northern Lights Academy had their cap and gown celebration for the three graduates when they had their prom on May 26, 2018.

The awards ceremony was today June 28, at 11:30 am.

J.C. Erhardt Makkovik will have their cap and gown ceremony for the six graduates, the ceremony is this Saturday, June 30.

The J.C. Erhardt Kindergarten to grade 11 graduation celebrations was today June 28, at 10 am.

B.L. Morrison School in Postville will have their awards night this evening at 6:30 pm.

The Amos Comenius School in Hopedale had their grade 12 cap and gown graduation the same time as they had their prom on June 2.

The awards assembly was held on Wednesday, June 26.

Jens Haven Memorial School had their awards today at 9:30 am for grades K to six.

Grades seven to 12 will have their awards at 7 pm until closing.

The cap and gown ceremony will also be at held at that time.

Government Investments Help Strengthen Labrador Communities, Social Enterprise and Business

The Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and Nunatsiavut are investing more than $900,000 for two projects, including a youth-led social enterprise and an economic development conference to promote products and services in Labrador.

Randy Edmunds, MHA of Torngat Mountains today announced $235,572 for the SmartICE Sea Ice Monitoring & Information Inc. project.

Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador announced $660,000 from ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund for SmartICE and $20,000 for the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce. President Johannes Lampe announced $50,000 from the Government of Nunatsiavut.

Through this investment, SmartICE, will commercialize its SmartBUOY prototype instrumentation for measuring sea-ice thickness and establish a technology production centre in Nain to be operated by trained Inuit youth.

ACOA funding for the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce helped it to market and host the 2018 Expo Labrador Conference and Trade Exhibition taking place June 25-28 in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. This annual event provides a venue for knowledge transfer for delegates and raises local, national and international awareness about the products and services available within Labrador.

These investments support the Atlantic Growth Strategy, one way the Government of Canada is working to achieve its Innovation and Skills Plan outcomes in this region by helping ensure everyone has the jobs, skills and learning to seize new opportunities and succeed in a growing innovation economy.

Passenger and Freight Service to Commence on the North Coast of Labrador

Nunatsiavut Marine wishes to advise the public that the MV Northern Ranger is tentatively scheduled to depart Lewisporte on Thursday, June 28 at 12 noon.

The vessel will commence passenger service upon arrival in Black Tickle, calling Cartwright and Rigolet, enroute to Happy Valley Goose Bay.

Please refer to our vessel updates page for the latest estimated arrival and departure times, as ice conditions could affect sailing times and routing.

The MV Astron is expected to depart Lewisporte early next week, pending favourable ice conditions.

Please note that at this time perishables such as fruits, vegetables, and chilled products will not be accepted for shipment because of potential delays and the risk of spoilage due to ice conditions.

The acceptance of frozen cargo is by appointment only. Please contact the freight office in Lewisporte or Happy Valley — Goose Bay prior to bringing refrigerated cargo to the dock.

NIPD and Jerry Cans

National Indigenous Peoples Day was celebrated in most parts of Nunatsiavut last week.

As part of the NIPD celebrations there were concerts brought to you by the Department of Health and Social Development.

The Jerry Cans will also be in Makkovik.

They are scheduled to be there for a concert this evening at 7 at the JC Erhardt School Gym and also to do a youth session at the school on June 27th.

In Rigolet, they will hold their celebrations tomorrow, June 27, 2018 at the community Hall.

There will be prizes, good food, and a live performance by the Jerry Cans, speeches and drum dancing starting at 6:30 pm.
