Walk-in Services Available for Mental Health and Addictions

As part of its strategic plan to improve access and better health, Labrador Grenfell-Health (LGH) is pleased to announce the launch or DoorWays in Hopedale and Nain.

DoorWays is a single session walk-in counselling service that is offered on a first come, first basis.

Some of the topics that could be discussed with a counsellor include: depression, anxiety, bullying, coping, grief/loss, addictions, relationship issues and/or stress.

In Hopedale and Nain, DoorWays is every Thursday starting June 14th 2018 from 2pm to 5pm (last walk-in is accepted at 4pm) at the Hopedale and Nain Clinics DoorWays is not an emergency service.

Individuals experiencing a mental health emergency (that is, risk of immediate harm) should call 911 or the Mental Health Crisis line at 1-888-737-4668, or proceed to the nearest Emergency Department.

Hebron Archaeology Project Still Taking Names

The Hebron Selection Committee is preparing to select participants for the Hebron Family Archaeology Project, taking place on July 23-30.

Michelle Davies is the Archaeology Assistant for the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says that if you have not yet applied and wish to put your name, please visit her at the NG building, or call at 922-2942 ext. 230 by Friday.

Makkovik Fish Plant

Yesterday we had news on the Nain fish plant.

Today we contacted the Makkovik fish plant and spoke to Morgan Boyd, who is the Manager there.

He says there are ten employees cleaning the fish plant at the moment.

Boyd says the engineer arrived sometime last week.

He adds, as of yet, there are no crab fishers or boats there.

13th Annual Rhubarb Festival 2018

The 13th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale will begin on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 with plans for a fun-filled week.

The events start off on Tuesday July 17 at 4:30pm at the Nanuk Centre with a fireman’s Challenge then a beauty Pageant at 6:30pm.

Other events throughout the week include: DHSD Seniors Luncheon, Mini fair/Carnival, Rhubarb bake-off, VALE Community BBQ, and many more.

The last day of events will be on Saturday, July 21, featuring a Fishing Contest and Community Bonfire.

Little Readers and Singers Wanted

OK radio is seeking help from the Audience for the Sugusivut and Teen Rockers shows.

Sugusivut (Children’s Show) is every Wednesday from 3-4 pm, and the Teen Rockers show is every Thursday from 3-4 pm.

We need your help with recordings of your children or youth reading Inuktitut books.

Or maybe your child or youth can sing, and would want to get recorded.

Or they might be able to tell us something interesting they have done, or are still doing.

Nain Fish Plants Opens

The Nain fish plant opened this morning.

John Ikkusek is the Manager for Nain fish plant.

He says they are eight employees cleaning the plant.

Ikkusek says the Engineer will arrive next week.

He adds the char fishery will start up after the clean up.

OK tried to get hold of Makkovik fish plant, but no one was available at this time.

Eastern Health is pleased to announce the recipients of its 8th annual CEO Awards of Excellence. The awards were presented in St. John’s on Thursday, June 28, 2018 during the organizations Employee Recognition Week which runs from June 25 – 29, 2018.

David Diamond is the President and CEO of Eastern Health.

He says the CEO Awards of Excellence event was designed to recognize and express appreciation for employees who, by their outstanding contributions and achievements, help support Eastern Health’s vision of Healthy people, healthy communities. Employees were nominated for the awards by either colleagues or supervisors.

A total of seven winners were chosen from among 77 nominations: one of them was:

Connectedness (team award), went to the Aboriginal Patient Navigators with Professional Practice and Aboriginal Health at the Health Science Centre raised awareness to support the introduction of Indigenous culture, traditions, practices and ceremonies to enhance the understanding of Indigenous families and their ways of being within communities.

Northern Ranger Departing for North Route

Nunatsiavut Marine would like to advise the public that the MV Northern Ranger will depart Happy Valley – Goose Bay late this evening for Rigolet, Makkovik, and ports north, as far as current ice conditions will permit safe passage.

Please be advised that delays are expected and that all ports may not be accessible due to heavy ice conditions still persisting in some areas.

Passengers are advised that routing changes are possible and that they may not reach their final destination and are asked to take this into account when choosing whether or not to travel at this time.

The vessel is scheduled to depart Happy Valley – Goose Bay at 11 PM tonight (July 3).

Passenger boarding will take place between 8 PM and 10 PM.

All passengers are required to be onboard by 10 PM.

Communal and Commercial Licenses Now Available

The Communal Food Fishery Licenses are available at the Nunatsiavut Government Offices.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources for Nunatsiavut Government.

He says these licenses are available for the food fishery for trout and char, and that includes tags for 7 salmon.

He added the commercial char licences will be out in early July.
