President offers condolences on the passing of Carol Brice- Bennett

Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe says he was saddened to hear of the passing of Carol Brice- Bennett, who was instrumental in gathering much of the data that helped pave the way for the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

“Carol was a well-respected anthropologist and researcher who devoted much of her life documenting Labrador Inuit history”, says President Lampe. “ On behalf of the Nunatsiavut Government and Beneficiaries of the Labrador Land Claims Agreement, I extend my condolences to Carol’s family and friends.”

Ms. Brice-Bennett passed away on Sunday, surrounded by family, in Montreal where she was born and retired in 2015.

After graduating in anthropology at McGill University and Memorial University of Newfoundland, Ms. Brice-Bennett contributed to early research on Inuit land claims. Best known for the study “Our Footprints are Everywhere: Inuit land use and occupancy in Labrador”(1977), she also authored four additional books on Labrador Inuit history and culture, and completed the text on a reference book for use by secondary schools in the Labrador School Board. She also served as chair of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Ratification Committee, leading up to the final vote that established Nunatsiavut.

Gas Prices Predicted to Jump this Week

Brace yourselves.

Gas is predicted to take a leap at the pumps this week.

Gas is expected to go up by almost 3 cents (2.9) while diesel is up even more (3.2 cents).

Heating and stove oils aren’t spared the hit, increasing by 3.6 cents a litre.

This is in the wake of the Irving takeover of many Ultramar locations in the province, which George Murphy of the Consumer Group for fair gas prices calls a step backwards for competition in the province.

Message to the residents of Nain from Nain Care.

The following message is to the residents of Nain from Nain CARE.

After a recent meeting, our committee looked over the guidelines regarding the assistance of people in our community.

As a committee, we made a decision on our future spending with the remaining limited funds we have.

In our meeting, it was decided that we won’t be able to assist people who have moved away from Nain, mainly regarding travel. We are very sorry for this inconvenience.

We will continue to do our best to assist people in our community with emergencies as we have done so in the past.

Because of the low funds, we are kindly asking the community of Nain, whether it be groups or individuals to fundraise in order for us to continue with Nain Care endeavours.

Thanks in advance for understanding.
