Ideas and suggestions of programs for seniors

Are you a senior 55+ and have ideas or suggestions on programs, services or concerns for your age group .

Beverly Hunter is the Regional Elders Coordinator for Nunatsiavut.

Hunter says she is in Nain until Friday and would love to hear from you concerning those issues.

Beverly can be reached at the hotel or she can come to see you, if that would be easier.

She will also be at Seniors Merchandise Bingo at 1 pm on Wednesday at the DHSD Building.

This evening at 7 pm, she’s encouraging seniors/elders to also come to the child and youth advocacy open house at the NG building.

CEEP

Postville has received funding for the community employment enhancement program.

Shirley Goudie is the Town Manager.

She says they plan to start the program on November 19th 2018.

Jobs include sewing traditional crafts and assisting elders.

Postville Inuit community government currently has one person applying.

They are accepting applications for people to apply for the community enhancement program.

No IlinniaKatigennik Again

The program IlinniaKatigennik scheduled for Tuesdays is postponed again.

Due to a shortage of staff.

Major Renovations underway at OK Building (Audio)

On the morning of September 7, the OKâlaKatiget Society staff walked into work to find the bottom floor flooded with about a foot of water, which left the building with a lot of damage.

Arlene Ikkusek is the new Executive Director for OK.

She says it could take a while yet for the buildings renovations to be fully completed.

Coastal Community Freezers

OK radio contacted each of the north coast community freezer workers to see what they have to offer in their freezers.

In Happy Valley Goose Bay; they have char, red and blue berries, strawberries and raspberries, peas, corn, potatoes, carrots and cabbage.

Nain, Hopedale, Postville and Rigolet have char only available today to offer in their communities.

Sevenplex in Hopedale (Audio)

The sevenplex in Hopedale has been completed.

Michelle Kinny is the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Development for Nunatsiavut government.

She says they have selected six people out of the fourteen applicants.

Kinny says the people selected will be moving in by the middle or end of this month.

Gas Prices

The regulated price of fuels is inching up again this week, with cost increases across the board.

Gas sees a rise of about half-a-cent per litre (0.6), while diesel is up two cents per litre.

Furnace and stove oil are up by close to two cents (1.95 and 1.67 respectively), and residential propane is up by one cent.

Alana Johns (Audio)

The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in partnership with Alana Johns, Department of Linguistics University of Toronto, will be offering a Basic Introduction Session on how to transcribe audio into Inuttitut.

Johns says this will take place tomorrow October 12 at NG’s main board room in Nain, from 1-4 pm.

She says anyone who is interested can contact Shirley Jararuse at the Nunatsiavut government.

Coastal Community Enhancement Employment Program

The Inuit Community Governments in each of the North Coast communities had applied for and some has received funding to do the Community Enhancement Employment Program (CEEP).

OK Radio contacted each of the ICG’s.

In Rigolet, they will be having two processes of CEEP.

The first process will start on October 17, 2018 and the second will start on October 29.

The selected people will be doing craft work such as slipper making, mitt making, grass work, earrings, making purses and mukluks.

The program will see the selected people reach their 400 hours.

In Makkovik, they are still awaiting funding to do the CEEP.

In Hopedale, the ICG is still accepting applications and
their start date for CEEP should be October 15, 2018.

They will be constructing garbage boxes, painting the HICG, repairing the floating dock and a community clean up.

In Nain, the ICG is still awaiting approval from the province.

The projects they will be doing is renovations on the Fire Hall, constructing garbage boxes, Kamutik’s and helping the Moravian Church in whatever help they need.

OK Radio was unable to reach Postville ICG at this time, so will have more information when it becomes available.

English River Fish Count in Postville (Audio)

The English River Fish Count in Postville will wrap up this week.

Todd Broomfield is the Deputy Minister of Land and Resources for Nunatsiavut government.

He says there are more fish this year then other years.

Broomfield says there is also more Atlantic salmon.

He will also give you information on the Catch Logs.
