DHSD Diebetes Bingo

There will be a Diabetes Bingo held today Thursday October 18 2018 at 6pm.

Alice Okkuatsiak is the Community Health Worker for DHSD here in Nain.

There will be ten games with prizes that will be healthy food items.

The mini jackpot prize is a box of groceries and the jackpot prize is a bigger box of groceries.

The bingo is open to anyone, Adults 18+.

There is no fee and open to anyone who wants to attend.

The bingo will take place at the Multi-purpose room at the DHSD building.

Hopedale Councillors

Hopedale recently had their Inuit community Government councillor election on October 16, 2018.

There were seven candidates who ran in the election.

Sarah Jensen, Richard Boase, James Tuttauk, Melvin Hurley, Patty Dicker, Danielle Pottle and Kitora Abel.

After the election finished Sarah Jensen had 92 votes, Richard Boase had 77 votes, James Tuttauk had 61 votes, and Melvin Hurley had 56 votes who won and will fill the councillor seats.

There is one more seat for councillors to be filled.

Another bi-election will be held to fill the seat, there hasn’t been a date to determine when the election will take place.

Update on Nigivik Center

The Nigivik Centre has been in operation now since May of this year.

The program is in partnership with the Department of Health and Social Development and the Nunatsiavut Government.

Shelley Dicker is the Community Food Coordinator for the Centre.

Dicker says the Nigivik Center first began in Nain on May 3, 2018.

The Nigivik centre provides two different programs each week.

Programs are offered to anyone who is willing to learn how to cook or prepare food.

So far the center has been a big success.

Dicker adds right now they are currently seeking funds to keep continuing the Lunch programs for students.

Dicker says yesterday the center provided their first hot meal for the children.

They served Spaghetti during dinner hour.

TaKuaKautik in Nain (Audio)

There will be a food bank that will be starting here in Nain called TaKuaKautik.

Brenda Jararuse is the Chair of TaKuaKautik.

she says that the TaKuaKautik will be located at the Nigivik Centre.

She says the food bank will be available for anybody who feel that they need the service.

Legalized Cannabis

Newfoundland and Labrador today, became the first jurisdiction in Canada where non medical cannabis is legal for recreational use.

Hundreds of people were lined up in St. Johns before midnight for the legalized cannabis sales in Canada.

In this province you must be at least 19 years old to purchase, consume or possess cannabis.

Cannabis is not permitted for use in public places or inside vehicles.

Of course driving while impaired remains a serious criminal offence with zero tolerance under provincial law for anyone under 22 just as with alcohol.

There is also zero tolerance for novice drivers and drivers of commercial motor vehicles.

Gas Prices

It looks like there will be a big drop in the price of gas tomorrow.

George Murphy of the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices is predicting a drop of five cents a litre come midnight tonight. That equates to about 22 cents a gallon.

Diesel will drop by about two cents a litre as will heating and stove oil.

RCMP Investigates Truck Fire

The Nain RCMP received a phone call early this morning stating that there was a vehicle that was on fire.

Ed Nugent who is a Sergeant with the Nain RCMP department.

He says at 2am they received a call about a truck that was engulfed in flames on Middle Path road.

Nugent says the Nain Fire Department came and got the fire extinguished.

The investigation is still underway.

Makkovik and Hopedale Events (Audio)

The Departments of Health and Social Development in Hopedale and Makkovik has a lot planned a lot for the month of October.

Mckinley Winters is the Team Leader in Hopedale.

He says last week, they had a ghost story telling and the elders enjoyed.

Winters says they will have Halloween events for the month of October as well.

In Makkovik we spoke to Linda Pottle, the Team leader for Makkovik.

She says they also have a busy month as well.
Pottle says they had staff meeting with the regional staff and facilitators.

She adds they have a busy schedule for Halloween as well.

Canada Post Union issues strike notice

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says it has given strike notice to Canada Post that workers could walk off the job as early as next week.

The union representing 50,000 Canada Post employees says rotating strikes will begin Monday if agreements aren’t reached with the Urban Postal Operations and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers bargaining units.

The Canada Post is pushing for improved job security, an end to forced overtime, and better health and safety measures.

Two of our reporters hit the streets today to get peoples take on this.

Out of the many asked only three agreed to answer our questions on the Legalization of Marijuana.

Most people found this to be a very funny topic and refused to talk to us.

OK Radio spoke to Kelly McLean, Rosina Howell and Jaimie Brake on how they feel about the legalization of Marijuana.
