Living Room in HVGB (Audio)

There is a place that has been recently opened in Happy Valley Goose Bay, the “Living Room”.

Sharon Edmunds is the Team Leader for Department of Health and Social Development.

She says this facility can be used for like family connections clients and people who are homeless and for anyone who would like to go there for coffee or tea.

LATP Update

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership and Vale is still holding information sessions about the opportunities for training and employment at Voisey’s Bay.

Keith Jacque is the Executive Director with LATP.

He says they held their first information session in Hopedale on September 26, 2018.

And they held one in Nain on October 1, 2018.

Jacque says today the open house is scheduled in Sheshatshiu, Located at the Band Council boardroom today and tomorrow, October 29 to the 30th.

The next community will be held in Natuashish on November 1st-2nd, 2018.

The open house information sessions will be from 2-5pm and 6-8pm each day.

Are you are interested in training to become an underground miner? If so you have to have these to qualify- you must have Grade 10 completed, at least 6 months work experience, and a clear criminal record.

Jacque adds that LATP will be looking at doing some house cleaning training in the near future like a camp attendant this will be offered in Nain and Natuashish.

TB Community Meeting

There was a TB meeting that was supposed to be held in Nain last week but due to weather it was rescheduled.

The new date for the TB Community meeting will be held on November 1, 2018

It will take place at the Nunatsiavut Government Administration Building boardroom at 7 pm.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Salmonella Contamination

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says a recall has been issued for a popular brand of chicken burgers due to possible salmonella contamination.

Janes brand Pub Style Chicken Burgers are being pulled from stores, in connection to an outbreak of illnesses linked to uncooked chicken products.

The product in question is the 800g box, with code 2019 MA 14 printed on the outside of the package, 1348M printed on the inside. The product has UPC 0 69299 12491 0.

Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where purchased.

As of Friday, there have been 474 confirmed cases of Salmonella illness connected to outbreaks across the country, including 11 here in Newfoundland and Labrador.

If you believe you have become ill after consuming a recalled product, the CFIA says you should contact a doctor.

MV Northern Ranger Update – Delayed Departure for North Run

Nunatsiavut Marine wishes to advise passengers that the MV Northern Ranger is estimated to arrive in Happy Valley-Goose Bay at 2:15 pm this afternoon.

Once freight operations are complete, the vessel will depart for the north run and operate on a load and go basis until back on schedule.

Passenger boarding will commence at 6 pm until 7 pm and the vessel will depart at 8 pm.

Creative Arts Festival 2018

The Labrador Creative Arts Festival celebrates its 43rd festival in November.

Matthew Barrett is the Manager at the LOAC.

He says that this year’s festival is taking place from November 14th-20th, 2018 at the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

“Transformation” is the theme of this year’s Labrador Creative Arts Festival.

Each year the Festival chooses a theme to base the festivals creative base on.

On stage, in workshops and all throughout the week, along with artists from all disciplines we can only imagine what this November week will be transformed into by the end.

Junior Canadian Rangers Update

The Nain Junior Canadian Rangers are looking for adults to volunteer to become a Adult Committee.

Rex Howell is the second YC with Canadian Rangers in the Nain patrol.

He says that they held their last meetings last Tuesday at the K-12 gym.

The committee advises the Canadian Rangers on what types of training they would like to see given to the JCR’s.

Holwell says they are looking for responsible adults who are willing to join.

Right now they have 10 Junior Canadian rangers who participate.

He added that the adult committee members must pass a criminal record check and pass a vulnerable sector check.

Jordin Tootoo Retirement

ITK president, Natan Obed congratulates Jordin Tootoo on his retirement from the NHL

On October 19 2018, Jordin Tootoo officially announced his retirement on twitter, saying “after 220 regular season games with the wheat kings and 723 games in the NHL I have decided to retire from the NHL to focus on giving back to the indigenous community”

Obed says on the ITK site, “Jordin, through his play on the ice and openness to talk about difficult issues off it, is an inspirational role model.

I appreciate his commitment to promoting wellness and mental health through sport, and i look forward to areas where we can collaborate in improving outcomes for Inuit in Canada”

“Jordin has shown Inuit that we can come from small Inuit Nunangat communities and succeed at the highest levels of our chosen sport.

Thank you for persevering when there were many barriers in your path.”

“On a personal level, I have appreciated Jordin’s friendship and support over the years and wish him the best in his retirement from the NHL.”

Haynes Store Broken Into

The Nain RCMP detachment received a disturbing phone call this morning.

We spoke with Sergeant Ed Nugent who is with the RCMP Department.

He says a break and enter occurred at the Haynes General Store.

Sgt. Nugget says they received a call from the store owner early this morning around 9am.

He says the locks were cut with bolt cutters and the alarm system was cut and broke.

If anyone has any information that may assist in their investigation, they are asked to call the Nain RCMP Detachment at 922-2862, or call the crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Nunatsiavut Marine Update (Audio)

It’s that time of the year where the freight and shipping season will be closing again.

But even though the shipping closing dates were put out in early August, there is a lot of freight to be shipped up from the terminal and dock in Lewisporte.

Gary Latimer is the General Manager of Nunatsiavut Marine Inc.

He says MV Astron will make another 2, 3 or 4 more trips up the north coast communities, there are also times when they get the MV Northern Ranger to help with cargo.

Latimer says this is the last year for both vessels to serve Labrador.

A new ferry will take over in June which will be managed by Labrador Marine Inc from out of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
