Jobe J Tournament

The 23rd Annual Jobe J Flowers Memorial Volleyball Tournament is scheduled for November 9th and 10th, 2018 in Hopedale.

The deadline to register your teams is Tuesday, November 6th at 8:00 PM.

Boas Mitsuk who is the Recreation Director for Hopedale.

There is Male and female divisions, each team must consist of a minimum of four players or a maximum of six players.

Fees will be $10.00 a player and, Fees must be paid before your first Game.

Mitsuk says as of right now there are seven women’s teams and five men’s team registered.

There are two women’s teams from Natuashish and one men’s team from Natuashish.

They have mixed teams consisting of players from Nain, Makkovik, Postville and Sheshatshiu.

When Crossovers are determined, NO team can add players only play with the ones registered.

There will be absolutely no tolerance for drugs and alcohol.

Family Resource Center

The Nain Family Resource Center received a generous donation of Halloween treat bags today from the Nunatsiavut Marine.

If you have child/children ages 0-5 years of age and who are not yet in school they can drop by at the Family Resource Center to pick up a treat bag.

This will take place today from 2:00 – 4:15 pm.

Gas Predictions

George Murphy is predicting a slight dip at the pumps this week.

Murphy says gasoline is showing a dip of just under three cents per litre this week.

Heating and stove oils show a drop of 0.5 cpl while diesel is showing a dip of just under a cent per litre.

Halloween Story (Audio)

It is good to hear stories about Halloween from Elders.
Adam Lidd is an Elder from Nain.

He says when he was growing they used to make their own Halloween costumes.

Lidd says they used to have homemade candies and wild food when they used to go out trick or treating around town.

Nain Halloween DHSD/Rec Contest

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development held their Halloween Window Decorating contest.

Here are the winners for the Halloween window decorations:

1. Most Spookiest window went to Gwendolyn Dyson, Most creative went to Pauline Dicker and most fun went to Kirsten and Desmond Henoche.

Here are the prizes for the window decorating contest: first prize was a $100 gift card; second prize is $75 gift card and third was a $50 gift card.

Congratulations to you all, everyone did an awesome job.

Also the Nain Recreation Department held a family Pumpkin Carving Contest.

Winners were: 1st Place went to Gwendolyn Dyson and Michael Dyson Jr with a pumpkin carved as Chucky

2nd Place went to Bradley Lampe & Cailen Angnatok with Haunted house pumpkin and third place winner went to Robyn Martin & Jamal Kohlmeister with the pumpkin Boo.

Flu Clinic

Public Health in Nain will be holding their annual flu clinic in November.

Everyone 6 months of age and older can receive the flu shot, it is recommended that pregnant women, elders and young children receive the vaccine.

The flu clinic will take place from November 5 to November 8 from 9am to 12pm and 1 pm-7 pm.

Halloween Tips (Audio)

Tomorrow is Halloween, October 31st.

Sergeant Ed Nugent is the RCMP for Nain detachment.

He came into OKâlaKatiget Society and gave Halloween tips for everyone, on what to do and not, while the children are out trick or treating.

JHMS Halloween Parade

The Jens Haven Memorial School will be holding their annual Halloween parade tomorrow.

We spoke with Jacob Larkin the principal at JHMS.

He says the parade begins at 1:15-2:15 pm at the K-12 gym.

Children from K-12 come together to the gym for the spot dance, to show off their costumes from each grade.

Then later teachers hold their Halloween parties in their classrooms from 2:15-3:00 pm.

He adds this sure will be a lot of fun for both teachers and students, and treats will also be provided for each classroom party.

YC Haunted House

The Youth Center in Nain will be holding a Haunted House this year.

Kim Oliver is the Team Leader for the Youth Center.

She says they will have a monies donation box during the event; this donation box will be donated to the Nain Moravian Church.

Starting at 8:30 pm tonight located at the Youth Center enter through the basement.

Children under the age of 12 year will need to be accompanied by an adult, entry in through the basement.

Oliver says they have junior and high school students who will be volunteering for this event.

She says Prepare to be scared and enjoy the activity, all is welcome.

Okak Committee (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, have developed an “Okak 1918 Commemoration Committee”.

We spoke with Brenda Jararuse who is the director of Cultural with Nunatsiavut Government.

Jararuse says they have one representative from each Nunatsiavut Communities Upper Lake Melville and one from the Canadian constituency.

She says this committee’s purpose is to plan and develop ideas and events for the commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of the Spanish flu in Okak.
