Inuktitut Speak-Off

The Inuktitut Speak-Off on the north coast will be held in Makkovik this year.

Christine Nochasak is the Inuk Program Specialist.

She says there will be nine students participating this year.

Nochasak says it will be held at John Christian Erhardt Memorial school gym at 7pm.

DHSD Programs and Services (Audio)

The Department of Health and Social Development offices in Nunatsiavut are very busy with different services and programs in all the NG communities this year.

Kaila De Boer is the Director of Mental Wellness and Healing with the DHSD with the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says with a lot happening, they wanted to inform beneficiaries on what programs and services they offer.

Nain Arena (Audio)

The Nain Arena is in business now as of today.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk for Nain.

He says all the bleachers have been put in place, the electrical has been taken care of and the washrooms has been up graded as well.

Dicker says they have hired three Zamboni workers and assistance and they started to work today.

Commemorative Plaque Ceremony

A commemorative plaque ceremony will go ahead today at the Pulâpvik Community room here in Nain Friday, January 18 at 5pm.

This event will be held to honour the former residential school students, their families, and communities with a commemorative plaque and ceremony.

This is also an opportunity to learn more about the work completed on the Newfoundland and Labrador residential schools healing and commemoration project over the past year.

Supper will be served after a brief ceremony.

Workout for plus size women

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development will be holding a plus size women invitation.

The workouts will be held at Jeremias Sillitt Center workout room.

This will be held 5 days a week, from Monday to Friday.

Workouts will be for an hour from 7pm-8pm.

Workouts will include: Weights, Kettle Bells, 2 Treadmills, 2 Exercise Bikes, 1 Elliptical, 1 Rower, 2 Weight Benches.

This is only for plus size women, space is limited.

Them Days Inc

Them Days Incorporated will be coming to Nain in February to gather more input for their project and research.

Them Days Incorporated is a registered charity dedicated to collecting, protecting and promoting the stories of Labrador.

They publish quarterly oral history magazines and maintain an archive containing Labrador related materials.

They are asking for help to figure out the missing details for photos relating to Nain and other areas such as Hebron and Okak, plus other places in Labrador.

Please join them for their public event on Monday, February 4, 2019 starting at 6:00pm and again on Tuesday, February 5 from 1-4 pm at the NG Boardroom.

Their Project Researcher, Pei Li will be in Nain from Monday, February 4 to Wednesday, February 6.

If you would like to look at photos with him but can’t make it to the event, let them know so they can arrange a get together.

Also, Them Days Inc is looking for stories related to the pictures, or any other information.

They are particularly looking for stories relating to VETERANS for an upcoming special issue.

They would love to have your family’s story in that issue.

Them Days will also be going to Hopedale on Wednesday February 6, 2019.

LWG Mini Takeout Sale

The Nain Labrador Winter Games team will be having a Mini Takeout Food sale as part of their fundraising January 18, 2019.

Roxanne Andersen is the Labrador Winter Games Coordinator for the Nain team.

She says this is a great way to raise monies to help reach their goal for the track suits.

The Mini Takeout Food fundraiser will be held at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Center this Saturday, starting at 2 PM.

Here is what will be on the menu for that day.

Hotdog or hamburger with poutine $13.

Hotdog or hamburger and fries with or without gravy $11

Hotdog or hamburger and fries $10

Hotdogs $3

Hamburgers are being sold for $4 each, if you want to add cheese it will be an extra .50 cents.

Fries are being sold for $5 each, Fries & Gravy $7 and Poutine selling for $8 each.

Empowering Indigenous Women

The Nunatsiavut Government will be holding Empowering Indigenous Woman for stronger Community’s Workshops.

Tracy-Ann Evans is the Status of Women Coordinator for the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says that they are looking for peer facilitators in Nain.

If you would like to be part of this and would like to help change the face of mental health and violence against women.

The workshop will take place on January 28, 2019 at the Atsanik Lodge conference room at 6:30pm.

There will be refreshments provided.

LATP Camp Attendant Training

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership will be holding a camp attendant training program’s in Nain and Natuashish in March 2019.

This is for anyone who is interested in employment as a Camp Attendant at the Voisey’s Bay Inc. or with other employers who are seeking workers.

Deadline to register your name for the Camp Attendant training for Nain will be February 15, 2019.

The training for the Camp Attendant will be 11 days.

Theoren Fleury coming to Nunatsiavut

The Nunatsiavut Government presents a message of resilience and determination.

Theoren Fluery is coming to Nunatsiavut, Happy Valley Goose Bay and North West River.

Theoren Fluery is a NHL Stanley cup champion, Olympic gold medalist, world cup junior champion and an expert in the field of relational trauma.

From winning the Stanley cup to struggling with substance abuse; from leading the NHL in points to coping with sexual abuse as a young hockey player.

He brings a wealth of knowledge to the topics of pursuing excellence, Personal growth, overcoming sexual abuse and trauma.

Theoren Fleury will be coming to Nunatsiavut, Goose Bay and NWR from February 3-8 2019.
