Transition house contest deadline

The Nain Transition House Inc. is holding a contest to name their new building located at 9 AlakKatik road.

Your submission must be accompanied by a letter or paragraph explaining why you believe that the name you have submitted would be suitable for the name of the building.

The deadline to submit a paragraph or letter is today, February 25 2019.

The name must support one of the following: It must reflect the vision of the Nain Transition house where all women with or without children live a life free from abuse,and or must be named after an object that symbolizes strength or the empowerment of women, and or must be named after a woman who is/was a great leader and is/was an advocate for women in our community, and/or must be named in memory of a female community member and or must be culturally relevant.

To be eligible to participate, you must be a resident of Nain

Names in both Inuktitut and English are accepted.

The tentative date and for the winner will be announced on March 25 and she/he will receive $250

Savitsuat instructor wanted

The Nunatsiavut Government Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is looking for multiple individuals who can make Savitsuat, snow knives.

This is open to all Labrador Inuit communities, Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville and Rigolet.

Duties: to make Savitsuat by March 4, 2019. 50 are needed (between multiple crafts people.

Qualifications are to be able to complete Savitsuat, snow knives by March 6, 2019.

The Deadline to apply is Wednesday, February 27 2019.

expressions of interest; Iglugivak persons

The Nunatsiavut government department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is looking for five skilled and knowledgeable Iglugivak builders to instruct an iglugivak building workshops and to also be judge for a community Iglugivak building competition in each of the Nunatsiavut communities.

Brenda Jararuse, Director of Culture is looking for one instructor needed for each of the Labrador Inuit communities, Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet.

Qualifications are to have knowledge and skill in iglugivak building, and to be able to teach a group of people.

Duties are to instruct two half day iglugivak workshops for two age groups, ages 16-18 and ages 19+ on March 9 2019.

And to be sure to let participants know knowledge around iglugivak building and teach techniques to successfully build an iglugivak. And to be a judge in the Iglugivak building competition on March 10 2019.

The deadline to apply if anyone wishes to be an instructor is Friday, March 1st 2019.

LATP safety training

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership is still accepting applications for Safety Training programs they will be offering in March.

The safety training will be offered to anyone who is unemployed.

This is a great way to support individuals who need the safety training to continue in finding employment and also a great way to access work at the Voisey’s Bay or other industrial sites, but you much have these certificates.

LATP will be offering 6 different safety training in Nain this March.

Janelle Barbour is the NG Career Counsellor with LATP.

There will be six Safety training workshops in Nain starting March 18- March 23rd.
To enroll in these safety training workshops you must be unemployed and willing to take part in every training workshop, and you must fill out the application form with Janelle Barbour.

The safety training will include: Fall Protection, Standard First Aid, Transportation of Dangerous goods, Back injury Prevention, Power line Hazards and WHMIS 2015.

Food Bank Give Away

The TaKuaKautik (food bank) in Nain will have food a giveaway.

Brenda Jararuse is on the board for TaKuaKautik.

She says it will be held at the Nigivik Centre from 6-8pm on February 28th.

The food bags contains such as cereals, flour, sugar, soups and cereals bars etc.

Jararuse says this is for low income families, but if you need food you can call (709) 700 4739.

DHSD health program workshops

The Nunatsiavut Department of Health and Social Development started holding free health program workshops for anyone who has diabetes, arthritis, chronic pain, anxiety, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and thyroid disorders.

The workshops started last week, February 13. This workshop goes on for two and a half hours a week for six weeks. This is for adults with long term health conditions.

At the workshops you can learn how to live better with your condition, learn how to deal with challenges including fatigue, pain, depression and frustration; learn better ways to communicate with your doctor, family and friends;

Discover exercises to help improve strength, flexibility and energy and learn how to eat healthier.

100th day of school

Each of the coastal community schools will be attending their one hundredth day of school tomorrow.

In Postville at the B.L Morrison School, the elementary school students celebrated the one hundredth day of school yesterday.

The school students and staff held activities throughout the day.

Students were to bring one hundred of any kind of items.

They also had snacks, with ten different food items that counted to a hundred.

Gracie Jararuse Flowers Minor Ice hockey tournament

Today marks the 3rd annual Nain Minor Ice Hockey Fun Tournament in memory of Grace Iris Miriam Jararuse Flowers.

This tournament begins at the Nain Husky Centre this afternoon Thursday, February 21st and conclude on Sunday, February 24.

The first game is scheduled is for today 4pm and the opening ceremony will start at 6pm tonight.

Teams consist of Atoms, Peewee, Female and Bantam Midgets.

And the men’s division teams are: Harris Team, The Other Guys, RCMP, Red Cat.

Teams for Midget’s: are Gustave s Team, Minor Hockey Division, Team Gracie, Team Trevor, Goals galore and the Hockey Moms team.

Registration is $30 for Adults and $20 for students.

Sunday night at 9:30 pm will be the championship game followed by the award ceremony at 11pm.

Schedule could change any given moment, if more teams decide to enter.

Please come out and support the teams, in memory of Gracie Jararuse Flowers and have a fun.

Polar Kills

The Polar Bear hunting season opened to Nunatsiavut beneficiaries on February 4th, 2019.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources for Nunatsiavut Government.

He says three polar bears been harvested so far.

Ghetto Rich of Rigolet had his polar bear kill, Andy Andersen from Makkovik and Eva Obed of Nain.

Broomfield says there are nine more polar bear licences available.

He added there were two dead Caribou found in the Nain Area sometime last week.

Broomfield says the two caribou were found down Rhodes Island which is fifteen minutes away from Nain.

He says the caribou had been hit by an avalanche.

Broomfield says Nain’s Conservation Officer, Simon Kohlmeister had a permit from the Wildlife Officers to take these two caribou.

He adds that the two caribou were put in the Nain Community freezer.

Hebron Family Archaeology Workshop

The Hebron Meeting will be going ahead today, Thursday, February 21st at 3pm at the JS centre following senior’s bingo.

Michelle Davies who is the Archaeology Assistant with the Nunatsiavut Government says everyone is welcome to join and ways to share information, and plans for future programming at Hebron. Snacks and soup will be served!

She added that another meeting will be held on Monday, February 25th at 7pm for those who cannot attend tomorrow, and will be also be holding these workshops in Hopedale, Makkovik, and Goose Bay in March.
