Pamela Frieda is the temporary Food security coordinator for Hopdale.

She says that she is starting a pilot project and looking for hunters that are interested in helping to fill the freezer.

Gas and bullets will be compensated for any fish, seal meat, porpoise meat etc.

Gas will be determined by how far you travel and how much food is brought to the freezer.

-Gas will be compensated for the distance you travel
-If you donate EVERYTHING you catch, you will be compensated for the whole travel distance, if you decide to keep half your catch and you will be compensated for half the travel distance.
-If you wish to get the gas before you make the trip, you will be expected to travel again if there is no catch for the day you receive the gas.
– Hunters must sign off on their contribution & we will only accept food handled in a safe manner (clean and bag) bags are available at our office if needed.

Nigivik Centre Looking for 4 Individuals

The Nigivik Centre here in Nain is looking for four Individuals to start a basic Gardening program.

Pamela Webb is the Food Security Coordinator with the Nunatsiavut Government.

The Program will be having classes throughout the summer.

They will begin making Garden Boxes once they have the Individuals in place.

Pamela Webb updated individuals through Facebook on Monday, June 24, 2019.

She says instead of making wooden boxes for the gardening program they are looking for anyone with any old fish boxes or large plastic tubs that they no longer use.

Nain Moravian Cemetery Project

Tradition & Transition researcher and MUN Archaeologist Maria Lear is looking to hire assistants for the Nain Moravian Cemetery Project.

The project is a GPR survey which is a non-invasive geophysical method that allows you to capture a visual of what is below the ground’s surface.

The goal is to record the grave markers and to help note the location of unmarked possible graves within the cemetery.

Inuit Pathways requires that you are Nunatsiavut Beneficiary, at least 15 years of age, were in school this year, are returning to school next year, and have a SIN.

End of the Year after School Program Picnic

The After School Program in Nain will be having an End of the Year Picnic at the “Big” Playground for the kids.

Today Wednesday, June 26, 2019 there will be a picnic for kid’s ages 8-12 years old, and tomorrow Thursday, June 27, 2019 will be a picnic for kids ages 5-7.

Children are welcome to bring a snack of their choice.

Sandwiches, Cupcakes, and Rice Crispy Squares, along with a Jammer will be provided.

They will also have a few relay races and free play at the playground.

They ask that parents are to please drop your children off at the playground after school, and pick up is still at 4:45pm.

Annual Janet Memorial Walk

Postville Department of Health and Social Development is holding the annual Janet Memorial walk today.

Candy Jacque is the community health worker for the Department of Health and Social Development in Postville.

She says that the Annual Janet Memorial Walk starts at 6:30pm at the DHSD Building.

Jacque adds that people can donate to the Cancer Society online, or this evening during the walk.

The Early Childhood Education Course started in Nain today.
Jenny Lyall is the Regional Childcare worker for the Nunatsiavut Government.
She says there are nine students who started their training today.
Lyall says Linda Mercer from the College of North Atlantic is the instructor of this course.

Update with Lela Evans, MHA for Torngat District.

Lela Evans, newly elected MHA for Torngat Mountains District met with Minister of Transportation Steve Crocker and here is what she had to say on her Facebook timeline;

“I just had a good meeting with Minister of Transportation Crocker on the road wash out and on passengers waiting to travel on the coastal boat.

The work has started on the road wash out and stranded people will be assisted by helicopter.

The Freight from the tractor trailers is going to be handled between Cartwright’s port and Goose Bay, so freight will not be interrupted.

Regarding our people waiting to travel on the boat, I am happy to say that they are working on arranging the ‘boat plane’.

So that will be announced shortly. I am so pleased at the cooperation being extended.”

Moosehide Workshop

There is a Moosehide Workshop that is being offered and will be held outside of Nain.

This is a cultural, hand on, learning skills workshop from Wednesday July 10, 2019- July 20, 2019.

This 10 day workshop will take place 20 minutes outside of Nain at Joey Angnatok’s Cabin.

Learn how to clean moosehide from scratch the traditional Dene Nahjo way meanwhile exchanging traditional skills, fishing and a chance to meet new people during a wonderful experience.

This is open to all communities on the North Coast.

JHMS open mic

The Jens Haven Memorial School in Nain is happy to announce that they will be hosting their first Open Mic event this evening.

This event will be held from 7-9pm today, June 25, at the school gym for students and families.

This is an informal event intended to help celebrate the end of the school-year in a fun social setting.

Please note that children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian.

They will feature performances by both students and teachers.

The Beardos will also be performing at the end of the night.

There will be baked goods and hot chocolate available to purchase during this event, and funds raised will go towards supporting the music program and special events at the school.

Guests are welcome to bring a deck of cards, any games, books, or devices to the Open Mic, but they will have some games provided.

They hope to see you there!

Ice Assistance Emergency Program

The Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is providing financial assistance, through the Ice Assistance Emergency Program.
This is eligible for fish harvesters in affected areas of Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec who have been prevented or delayed from fishing because of ice conditions in their fishing areas.
Assistance payments will be issued by Service Canada to eligible recipients on behalf of DFO.
Fish harvesters who’s EI Fishing Benefits have ended may experience a prolonged period of time without any source of fishing-related income because they could not safely leave port.
This is a special grant program provided by DFO and is not an extension of EI benefits.
Fish harvesters will be eligible for up to $508 per week.
The Ice Assistance Emergency Program application form is available on the DFO website at http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca, and at DFO and Service Canada offices in the ice-affected areas, as of June 10, 2019.
